For the first time that I am aware of Trump is actually running for Re-election relying upon ONLY HIS BASE.
He is not just playing to his base, he is choosing to alienate those outside his base. His recent appearance at the anti-abortion event is a great example. First president to do so because all prior Republicans felt they also needed people outside the hard core base.
So ... WILL IT WORK?
It should not. In fact, if it worked it would show the total breakdown of our democracy, because it’s premised on compromise, courting moderates etc.
BUT... the GOP is not dumb. In fact, they are very effective when it comes to election strategy. So what is the plan?
With voter suppression and the electoral college, one can only assume that it is a 5-8 swing state plan. In other words, that the GOP believes it’s hard core base is enough to carry the 5-8 swing states.
I guess we will see. We could have a second term President who is largely unsupported by women and minorities and most people with a higher education.
Crazy times. Fascinating if you’re into politics, almost terrifying if you’re into history
