Th greatest defense is the one beaten in the conference championship by the record-breaking offense known as the Greatest Show on Turf?
By a pass, no less?
:-)
The Sapp/Brooks/Kiffin defense was one of the best ever, over a sustained period. Literally, the namesake of a defensive approach that many teams would go on to try to emulate.
1985 Bears played their conference championship vs the #26 offense in the league and their offense put up 17 points for them.
1999 Bucs played their conference championship vs maybe the #1 offense of all time and their offense put up 1 point for them (1 FG drive minus a safety). And had a back breaking turnover with a late lead.
so yes that’s your argument.
Ok but the super bowl defense was scoring points so...
I don't know which defense scored more: 99 or 02 but I'd guess 02.
This is all from memory... I don't have the desire to back up my claim with numbers and facts... haha
2 defensive touchdowns for 99 bucs, and 9 defensive touchdowns for the 02 bucs
The 1999 defense was absolutely elite.
The 2002 defense was historic.
2 defensive touchdowns for 99 bucs, and 9 defensive touchdowns for the 02 bucs
Ties back to the offense. 2002 defense only scored 2 TDs when the opponent wasn't in full blown desperation mode. Better offense = more leads, bigger leads. Opponent's have to take more risks. The other 7 TDs came in an average situation of being up 15 with 2:30 left.
1999 Bucs offense only averaged 7.7 net points per game. Net meaning points scored minus points they were responsible for allowing.

FFS…
At some point, a rational human being understands when he’s been bested. The ‘99 defense was fantastic, but it won’t be considered an All-Time great if that team didn’t win - or even go to - the Super Bowl. The ‘85 Bears, ‘00 Ravens, and ‘02 Bucs can make that argument because they won the Lombardi. The ‘99 defense can’t say that.

Posts like this are why I say you're basically a troll lol

Because of the substantial difference in offenses. Look at the 2002 team without Brad Johnson. Stole a game vs Randy Fasani. Steelers game was over in 1st qtr. 15-0 vs Henry Burris. And by the way, 0 defensive touchdowns in those games.

And yet, here we are. Nobody on the planet is talking about Tampa Bay’s ‘99 Defense as the greatest of all time. Except you. Most rational humans pick up on stuff like this. And then there’s you.
Gotta respect the guy “who gets paid the big bucks to make big football decisions”.
He is more than willing to die on a hill made up of god-awful takes.
Cheers, sir!
Well I'm glad my gut could be back up by others research lmfao.
Biggs has it correct - winning it all just makes it different.
And our defense scored 3 tds in the super bowl, forced 5 turnovers, and had that early forced fg after the Brad Johnson early pick.
The word iconic comes to mind... we can all recall how we felt and how that went... against the #1 offense in the league.
02 defense is one of the greatest of all time. 99 defense might have been equal or close but they didn't win it all... yes the offense blah blah blah but it really doesn't matter.

The 1999 defense played the #1 and #2 offenses in the playoffs and allowed a total of 9 points.
If the difference to you is scoring defensive TDs when the win probabilities are 99.7%, 98.2% and 100% then you're not looking deep enough.
