The bench doesn't matter at all. Put any of these freaks on a good workout regime and they'll be exceptionally strong on the bench if it's that important.
When has the bench press ever translated into football success?
Actually: http://www.nfl.com/combine/top-performers#year=2009&workout=BENCH_PRESS&position=QB-RB-WR-TE-S-DL-LB-CB-OL-SPEC Thumb through the top 15 in bench reps year by year. I was surprised by the quality of NFL football players I saw. Especially when compared to the other events top 15's year by year. I'm not claiming to have made an indepth study of it. From what I saw though only the 40 had a higher concentration of what I would consider quality NFL players (and that seemed damn close tbh). *lol, JD. Yeah I agree, prolly doesn't matter much when looking for a TE. My post was intended for bench press in general.*
It really is an outdated pointless event, and the sh!tty part is that every year there is one or two guys that blow out a shoulder trying to max out and then miss the rest of the combine. I can see some kind of sled drill to show total body strength....but the bench press has nothing to do with football.
Not sure how seeing how strong a guy's upper body is is " pointless"
If a player doesnt bench very many reps it can be an indication that perhaps they arent as dedicated as you would like.I dont think that is the case with ASJ. The weak bench press by ASJ just confirms what I see on tape. He plays soft.
I guess he only plays marginally softer than Ebron, only doing 4 less.

Which given the total number of reps equates to what, like 18% less? Is that "marginally" less of something?

Actually,I think ASJ is pound for pound the softest player in the entire draft. He should be a great fit in New Orlean where he can be a big slot WR.

He is going to destroy this combine. Shouldn't be surprised that freak has more then prototypical arm length for his height.

It is far from pointless, but you have to (imo) factor in other things to get a true indication of upper body strength. You see many of these barrel chested T-Rex arm length body type dudes throw that bar up a ton and it don't mean shit. For a normal or above average arm length player it's a pretty good way to see how they will be able to use their upper body to either hold off defenders or fight off blockers with their hands/arms and gain/maintain leverage from either side of the ball. It's like every other measured event at the combine. By itself in a vacuum, it is pretty pointless. When you combine it with the film, and watching the player in position specific drills, it can confirm what your eyes are telling you or cause you to take a closer look at an area.
The olineman are running.
Did they let fans in again this year?
How is Lewan only about 310? He's over 6'7" and looks pretty muscular to me.
Seantrel Henderson is a giant human being.
