Gholston had a good showing at the end of the year. I don't get how some people think if a guy doesn't dominate in some form during his rookie year, then he's destined to be garbage.
There is a big gap between "garbage" and "good/solid #2 DE".
True but he was a ROOKIE that played well at times even though the coaching sucked. It's safe to assume that he'll be better going in to his second year.I have more faith in him being a good DE than "potential" packed Daquan bowers.
He was certainly a rookie and there is the expectation for growth...but how much? There is a reason why he was there for us to take in the 5th round. Can he rise up and overcome that and be a good #2 option for us? No one is saying that is impossible. Thing is, every single year for the past...well seems like f*cking forever, the Bucs have settled with rolling into camp with these types of players who showed "flashes" or "high motor" on a few plays from the previous year. It seems to burn us every year. If I had time this morning, I would go back and search for some of the crap that was said about 110 snap Aaron Morgan last year, and how he "played well at times" and was going to be a solid option going forward for us. I get that the coaching wasn't very good...but GMC played beastly all year, LVD played beastly all year, Mason was very very solid...etc. You can blame coaching to a certain extent, but past a certain point it could just be that a guys ceiling really may not be all that high. He will have his shot, and he may in fact turn out to be that DE who takes the 2nd or 2rd most snaps and ends up being very disruptive...im not seeing it though. I don't think it would be wise to hang our pass rushing hopes on just the edge rushers that we have on the roster. I would add at least one more in the first 3 rounds.
ROOKIE... ROOKIE... ROOKIE.I think he'll be the 3rd or 4th DE and that's a good place for him going in to the year.
Akeem Spence was a ROOKIE....ROOKIE....ROOKIE. I didn't hear the outcry from people when we went out an sought an upgrade at the DT position. Johnthan Banks was a rook rook rook, and we have acquired 2 C2 CBs who could very well push him to the #3 CB spot from a snap count stand point. This was done without seeing how he fit into the system. If we roll into 2014 without making any sort of significant upgrade to the DE position in the draft, then it means that Lovie and co. are satisfied and think they can make our current DEs into a solid rotation. I would be willing to bet though, that is not the case.
And I'm saying bring in one more guy but I wouldn't write off Gholston yet saying that he's already as good as he'll ever be. If he's the 4th DE and balls out then that's a good problem to have.
I'm good with that.

I'm in total agreement about the need to not rest on what we have, but I'm also definitely more keen on Gholston than you Chace. I wouldn't hand him the starting job, but I think there's reason to believe he has some upside. He was incredibly raw at MSU, and while in some ways his athleticism is overrated (not super twitchy, not very fast), he's got more power/strength than he's given credit for too. He was considered lazy by the draftocracy coming out of MSU, but I'm not sure that's quite right - I think sometimes it's easy to confuse laziness with the lack of technique - is he dancing with the tackle because he's taken the play off, or because he didn't use his hands right or lost leverage? I think in his case it was more often the latter (I watched a fair amount of MSU - my wife is a Spartan). He's a guy I really want to see with the new DC and maybe even more importantly with someone like Michael Johnson around.
Clayborn had 7.5 sacks and 3 FFs as a ROOKIE ROOKIE ROOKIE and he apparently sucks.
Can we get a restraining order on "Rookie Rookie Rookie?"

1st round pick. Started every game. Played a lot of snaps.I don't know who says he sucks tho.
I just think it's ridiculous to project Gholston as anything more than a camp body at this point. Dude had 10 sacks in 3 years in college and despite what some on these boards would like to think, he was far from amazing last year. He isn't even a lock to make the final 53 and yet some folks wanna crown him a starter. It's pretty ridiculous. Hopefully he steps up and is at least a rotational contributor because right now there is nothing to make me think he is more than Kyle Moore 2.0. Anything more than that would be fucking great!

Now tell me... Who is wanting to crown him a starter? Don't worry I'll wait.
Gholston showed me enough to think he has a bright future with the Bucs if he continues to ascend.
Agree with this.
Who are these folks that "wanna crown him a starter"?

How dare you two for thinking that way.Ascend? Where they do that at?
The truth is somewhere between "crowning him a starter" and "Kyle Moore 2.0." Can't assume he's going to be great, but if you think he just made "3 plays" than you weren't watching. PFF Game BallPositivity in the trenches for the Buccaneers has been hard to find away from Gerald McCoy. This strong all round display from William Gholston backing up a good game last week offers hope for a strong last month to offer promise for better times ahead in 2014.

Damn I should have brought a lunch for this one.
The hype with Gholston started way back in November or December when the times had that article about how Gholston has emerged as a force.....when he had barely stepped on the field. There were people wanting him to be the starter over Bowers and DTN at LDE back then (which probably would have been a good idea because he would have gotten more experience and we would know more about him) and now over the last few months, especially since we signed Johnson, folks have been talking about Gholston being our starting LDE over Clayborn. If you some how managed to miss all this then go search for it yourself. It's not my job to keep you up to date.
Sooo.. nobody has been saying that then. That's Classic JDub... "I need to prove my point, so I'll just pull this out of my arse. Doesn't have to be true or make any sense but oh well."
