I don't see how you can watch him run with Suh and still say he is just a DT. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yr9nWn4gvBQ
honestly i put zero stock in his 40 time. its something fun to talk about but who cares. he can run almost a full second faster than Suh but Suh is a monster and that slower 40 sure hasnt hurt his game at all
There's a reason he's not ranked higher...he's only 285 pounds and wins matchups with speed. He's really fast and twichy, but if the guard gets his hands on him and stuffs the initial speed move, there's not much Donald can do. That to me is the obvious flaw in his game...he's not big and fast..just really fast for a D-lineman. If you watch the video you posted, Maylock makes the same point. Like the guy...but would not reach for him dor two reasons:1. The flaw I spoke about2. The depth of the DT position in this draft...I mean you have Donald, Timmy Jerrigan, Louis Nix, Will Sutton, ....and a whole bunch of decent DTs. One or more will be available in the second round.
Oh man.. trying to be poilte here, but "wins matchups with speed"... Olineman cant block him because he's too fast and way too powerfull as well. How could you say that when a gaurd gets his hands on him and stuff the initial speed move there's not much he can do when he literally dominated every game he played in?? Where are the examples of the "not much he can really do". How could they exist when he dominated ever game he played in 2013? Nix ,Sutton and the other DTs in this draft are not even in the same realm.
Look - I don't hate Aaron Donald, just think picking him at #7 would be a reach. When you evaluate someone, it has to be based on projection of what he can do rather than what he did in college. There are many prospects that dominate in college and then go through the learning curve in the Pros. The guards he's going to face in the NFL won't be the same he's faced in his college career..they're going to be bigger, faster and better coached in the right techniques. His main strengths are quickness, relentless, hustle - he's faster than a typical DT, but slower and shorter than a typical DE. His main weakness is being undersized - something he can overcome, but that does make him slightly less than the ideal DT scouts look for. As for examples of what happens when he doesn't win with his initial burst...please check the video at exactly 1:40 minutes onwards. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yr9nWn4gvBQ
What's ideal size for a penetrating DT?

can Isay he is pr obably a better DT than a DE?
That's fair. He has lined up at UT much more than DE, so at this point that would be a safe statement. However, if we drafted him he would be splitting half his time to the right of McCoy and half his time to the left of McCoy, just like Michael Bennett did in 2011 and 2012. So he'd still be an interior rusher much of the time, and I personally don't think there would be any drop off in his effectiveness when he lines up on the outside at LDE.

You know I am not a big 40 guy. But when people are making the argument that he is only a DT and too slow to play DE, I think it is important to show that he is much faster and slightly smaller than a typical DT. This isn't the same thing as saying let's put Suh or McCoy or Louis Nix out at LDE. Donald is more of a tweener that is built like a really big LB more than a small DT. He moves like a big LB too. His 10 yard split and 40 time isn't comparable with other DTs. It's comparable with safeties, mobile QBs, and pass catching TEs. So while I don't care about the exact number down to the 100th of a second like some folks do, I do care that his overall performance shows he is more of a tweener hybrid than a typical DT. People should stop trying to pigeon hole him into one category and dismissing his potential to a lot more. His official 10 yard split and 40 are 1.59 and 4.68.....both are identical to Johnny Manziel's numbers. At 285lbs he is as quick and fast as Manziel. That. Is. Ridiculous.
Seriously i dont get why guys would be against taking him. I'd like to trade down maye 3-4 spots to pick him up, because the kid is an absolute beast. Yes we need an edge rusher but i don't see one outside of Clowney worthy of a high selection. Lining him up to next Mccoy would give us a nasty pass rush up the middle.

Me neither. Especially when most of the guys that are against it, would like to draft Barr or Mack. I guess they don't like the fact that Donald carries 30lbs more muscle, is 10x as strong, and is still just as fast. Must be because his arms are 3/4 of an inch shorter. Lol. :PKhalil Mack 6'3" 251lbs 40 time - 4.65 10 yard split - 1.56 bench reps - 23 arm length - 33 1/4" 3 cone - 7.08Anthony Barr 6'5" 255lbs 40 time - 4.66 10 yard split - 1.56 bench reps - 15 arm length - 33 1/2" 3 cone - 6.82Aaron Donald 6'1" 285lbs 40 time - 4.68 10 yard split - 1.59 bench reps - 35 arm length - 32 5/8" 3 cone - 7.11

He said "DT" not "DP", ya weirdo.(However, I can provide an answer in PMs)

to be fair i dont want to take Mack or Barr either. im ok if we move back a ways and get Donald. id really prefer a DE over him but if hes the best value then go for it

I really think he has proven today that he can be our LDE on 1st and 2nd down, move inside on 3rd down. Maybe draft or sign a smaller speed rusher type to come in on 3rd downs when Donald moves inside.

If you can offer a valid reason why he isn't a real option at LDE for us, please do share.
