It's so bizarre to me that we have this super long thread about Donald, who doesn't fit a need, and yet Michael Sam had nearly the same stats, against better competition, fits a need on our defense, and yet he's gay so we shouldn't draft him. It's really, really strange.

i think donald fits a much bigger need than sam.

Wouldn't be shocked to see the Vikings, Cowboys, Giants, or Bears trade up for him either.

Especially, the Cowboys. He's exactly what they need and do not presently have to make Marinelli's and Kiffin's defense work.

They are the team I'm expecting to trade up into the Top 10 to nab him.

Mentioned the Cowboys trade scenario about a month or so ago. So I'm not at all surprised to hear the latest reports. Still, there's many a slip between cup and lip. Definitely a scenario worth watching.

How so? I see the need being on the left side of the line, not on the interior. Sure, Donald can play any position, but Sam had verifiable clutch play from our weakest position on the line.

I assume you're just trolling, but I'll bite.  The reason there is a super long thread about Donald, is because there is a very good chance that he will be the best player available when the Bucs pick at 7 (or if they trade back a few spots).  Michael Sam is projected to go anywhere from the 4th-7th rounds.  Like Donald, he is undersized for his position, but unlike Donald he did not test well at the combine and has shown limited athleticism as well as pass rush moves.  Sam was helped by having other premier players on his defensive line.  When was the last time a 5th round pick had 60+ pages on the Red Board?  Just because he is gay doesn't mean the Bucs shouldn't draft him, but it doesn't mean they should, either.  If he is the BPA when the Bucs pick in the 5th or 6th round, then he would be welcomed with open arms.

I'm definitely not trolling. Michael Sam, in the biggest game of his life, on the biggest play of his life, came through in the clutch and won the Cotton Bowl with a sack fumble. Right now, we have Clayton and Bowers penciled in at his position. Gholston is there too, but he had limited production last year. Sam was the co-Defensive Player of the Year for the SEC. His combine wasn't great, but I think most of us agree that combine performances aren't all that important.Donald played very well against the ACC, but Sam had almost identical stats against the SEC.

Michael Sam was clutch on that play, and had a tremendous season overall.  He's a one season wonder, though.  He's undersized with limited athleticism and technique.  Those are the reasons no one is talking about him before the 3rd day in the draft.  I'll root for him wherever he ends up, because I think sports (and society in general) will benefit from a man of his courage and character succeeding.  Hopefully that is with the Bucs, but not until the 5th round at the earliest.

It's pretty simple really - college stats can be a little misleading. The reason nobody is talking about Sam here is the same reason we don't have super long threads about other 3rd day players. I will say that Sam does make sense as a late round option - I think he's a 4-3 DE, not a 3-4 OLB all the way. Steve White had a nice write-up on him. http://www.sbnation.com/2014/4/18/5604464/2014-nfl-draft-michael-sam-pass-rusher-position-projections

i don't see sam as a full time player, nor do I believe he has more explosion.

Excuse my ignorance on the subject matter but can Donald line up next to GMAC fulltime or would he need to be a rotational guy with GMAC. I cant see taking a guy at 7 for depth if thats the case.

I have asked this question multiple times in different threads and cannot get an answer. Why would we not be able to line up McCoy and Donald next to each other? It's not like there is only room for one dominant DT on the field.
