Bill Polian is a smart man. Bmflhtjcmaaz68N.png

ELL YEESPolian has said before that he loves Donald and wished there was a Donald coming out when he was GM. So maybe he's just connecting dots with Lovie and the T-2, but hopefully he has some intel...

His only comment on the pick was "Donald is the best 3 tech in the draft and that is the most important position for Lovie Smith" which is kinda strange. It's almost like he forgot Gerald McCoy was on our roster. He's pretty old....maybe he did forget. I would have expected him to say something along lines of Donald playing DE, NT, and outstanding depth at UT.

Excuse my ignorance on the subject matter but can Donald line up next to GMAC fulltime or would he need to be a rotational guy with GMAC. I cant see taking a guy at 7 for depth if thats the case.

He could play LE just as much as NT and could give GMC breathers at UT.

while i understand the objections to donald, i certainly think his upside and his attributes make him a great pick for us...anywhere in the draft.bschucher - many believe he could line up at LE, UT, and NT.  he probably wouldnt be the guy to plug at NT on run downs.  but he would probably make a great LE on run downs.  he would be great at UT and NT on pass downs.  mccoy gets nicked up almost every game, limps off the field.  many have questioned his effectiveness towards the end of games.  having another quality UT would probably do wonders for us.  and many wonder what mccoys next contract will be.  while i wouldnt draft donald to replace mccoy, i would draft him to protect us and give us another passrusher at the same time.

Not drafting Donald means we likely passed on the BPA

Herm Edwards said that he thinks Coach Smith will take Donald.  He said the 66 plays behind the Los was amazing.  He likened him to Sapp....but said he was not Sapp.  He also emphasized the 3 tech was the engine in this defense.  I HOPE he is right.  L&L make it happen!!!!

The thing I noticed when watching and rewatching his college games, was that he played NT just as much as UT and when he took on double teams versus the run he stood his ground and was rarely ever pushed around. He may be short but he is super strong from top to bottom and his low center of gravity makes him nearly impossible to move. He is also great and shedding the block at the right moment and grabbing hold of the RB as he tries to slip by. I think people would be surprised to see how well he does at NT. I'm not saying he wouldn't play LDE too....but he could probably play NT full time. Also, I think with McCoy and Donald side by side we could shift the D-line often right before the snap, effectively turning Donald into the UT and McCoy the NT. With two guys that can play either position equally as well, this could be done often and cause confusion/mistakes by the opposing O-line. With two top 10 DTs there is no rule that says McCoy always has to play UT.

Plus this only makes our DE's look better

I will say that picking Donald wouldn't make me unhappy. I think he's a tremendous player with a ton of upside. I just think we could get a guy in the later rounds who would fit our current roster better and pick up a guy like Evans in round 1 who is also a tremendous player, but fits a need on our team.
