Assessing the Quarterback Position By Collino Jan 7 2014, 9:11pmTwo things to start off with, 1) I am not a fan of Mike Glennon, 2) This is regarding the 2014 season. As I see it there are four options for the Bucs to pursue this season. Option 1: Stick behind Mike Glennon If the Bucs stick behind Mike Glennon, I can only see two real reasons as to why this would happen. The first is that this staff believes in Glennon and sees something that I don't. The other is that the guy they really want isn't available until next year whether that be in the 2015 draft, free agency, or if they draft a guy who needs a year to develop. One of those options that would be available in the draft is Brett Hundley out of UCLA. A guy that could be available in free agency in 2015 is Ryan Mallett. As for a developmental quarterback, taking a guy in the later rounds of the draft who has a high ceiling could be an option. Option 2: The draft This years draft has a good amount of quarterback projected to be drafted in the first round. The talent in this draft has taken a hit with both Mariota and Hundley returning to school, but still guys like Teddy Bridgewater, Blake Bortles, Johnny Manziel, and Derek Carr are expected to be taken in the first 10 or so picks. There are some more options available in the second round who could be good options for the Bucs. Guys like Brett Smith, AJ McCarron, Tajh Boyd, and David Fales. Another name often thrown around on here is Aaron Murray. Option 3: Free agencyThis years free agency pool took a significant hit when Jay Cutler was resigned to a ridiculous contract. Despite his resigning, other quarterbacks are still set to hit the market. Some of those are Josh McCown, Chad Henne, Josh Freeman, Brady Quinn, Matt Flynn, Matt Cassell, and Michael Vick. None of those options really bring anything special, so this is probably the worst of the four options. The only interesting guys for me are Josh McCown and Josh Freeman, but with recent news that McCown is likely to retire and with the unlikely return of Josh Freeman, I don't see any starter potential in the free agency market. Option 4: Trade There aren't many teams out there that are willing to trade away a franchise quarterback, so it is more likely to get a backup to a franchise quarterback. Imagine if the Bucs had gotten Nick Foles. Some of the guys out there are Ryan Mallett, Brock Osweiller, Kirk Cousins, potentially Robert Griffin III, Brian Hoyer, Case Keenum, Matt McGloin/Terrelle Pryor, Colt McCoy, Matt Moore, and Tyrod Taylor. Some of these guys aren't that great. Some of them aren't better than Mike Glennon. Out of those backups the ones I like are: Mallett, Cousins, Hoyer, Moore, and Taylor. Mallett and Cousins would probably come at the price of a second round pick and maybe some change. Hoyer and Moore aren't the greatest but Hoyer did show flashes of potential before forgetting how to properly slide. Taylor on the other hand is very dynamic and even got five or so plays a game this year just for that dynamic play ability. Some of you may remember him burning the Bucs for a stat line of 13/23 154 yards 2 TDs and 2 rushes for 27 yards this preseason. What's best for the Bucs:Option 3 seems like the worst of them all. The market is pretty dry at quarterback and it is unlikely that any franchise quarterbacks will be released. Option 1 could lead to another terrible offensive season unless major improvement is made by Glennon. Option 2 is probably the most future savvy. As long as they aren't trading to draft a quarterback, the draft can be very inexpensive and with the new CBA, abandoning ship on a quarterback isn't too hard to do. Option 4 is the next most interesting. Trading for a quarterback could be a good option for getting a young franchise quarterback. What I want: Either option 2 or option 4. I favor getting a backup over reaching for a guy that may not even be that great. I would like for the Bucs to put out feelers on Mallett, Cousins, and Taylor. Mallett and Cousins would come at a high price. Likely a 2nd round pick and probably a future pick based on performance. Taylor would probably be worth a mid to late round pick. Mallett and Cousins bring the more traditional quarterback style and can toss the ball around pretty well. Mallett hasn't done much in his NFL career though, but he did do pretty well in the preseason this year. Cousins did okay in his performances this season with some up and down performances. Taylor could bring a newer NFL era style. All of these guys could bust, but all of them could also boom. With our current defense, and new coaching staff, even with Glennon as quarterback, I think we will win more than 4 games next year and that will likely push us out of a top 10 pick next year, so IMO this is probably a good year to add another quarterback option.I'm not a big fan of Glennon, nor am I a detractor, I see that the kid has some upside and has some abilities that I really like, but I'm not sold on him either. I think that with a 4 month start and 13 NFL games of experience, he'll be the odds on favorite to start the season as the #1 quarterback option. I don't think we will sacrifice picks in this draft or 2015 to move up and take one of the top 2 quarterbacks, but I could see us grabbing a quarterback at #7 if one of the top three falls to us there. I could also see the Bucs seriously looking for a quarterback with their pick in the 2nd round. With either pick, I think that the idea would be for the quarterback to sit the year behind Glennon and challenge for the starting job in 2015 at the same time you get a year to see if Glennon can use the pressure of the pick behind him to play to his potential. Any pick after the 3rd round is probably not going to pressure Glennon enough (or possibly be ready in 2015) to be used in this manner and is probably a sign that the coaching staff believes that Glennon is their guy for 2014 and if he fails then they go all out in 2015 to get someone else. This is what I think I'd do at this point with this team. While I'm not a fan of Manziel at all, if he's there at #7 and he interviews well, I would probably seriously consider him at that point even over a playmaker like Sammy Watkins (whom I really like at #7) or Khalil Mack (my other choice). I see Manziel much as everyone else, boom or bust. With Glennon, I think we could get by a year without having to play him and let Manziel mature a bit more, but I also think Manziel would really push Glennon in 2014 and if there was a way to get Glennon to play his best, Manziel might just be the guy to do it.JMO.
LOL Dimke getting 9% of the vote.
Agreed with you Nitey. Even if we play the season all over again with the same coaches and players we win more than 4 games. So much shit went wrong that its statistically impossible to match that level of shit storm next year.Football is like rolling the dice. Very slight changes in routes cause interceptions, slightly different angles on hits and the ball comes loose or doesn't. I mean look at the Detroit game for example. Some of those turnovers we had, I've never seen anything like it. LaVonte hits a guy and he seemingly fumbles the ball back into the field of play. Those types of plays are very unlikely and we had those happen for us and to us on more than a couple occasions. David's hit on Geno, our FG kicker going on IR then we losing games from missed FGs. It was just a crazy season and I truly believe even if this team is no better than this year, we'll win more games. Pandora's box was open this year with penalties, MRSA, injuries, bad play calling and bad coaching....
Anyone who favors trading for Mallet, Cousins or Taylor(seriously WTF?) isn't very sharp.

Glennon is better or as good as all three.
Who: Grab a vet, keep Glennon, Draft Garoppolo late 1st or early second. Assess in extra long mini camp, training camp and preseason. How: Either trade back from 7 and grab an extra pick or draft Watkins at 7 and work the board for Garoppolo. Why: Lowest risk, highest ceiling.
One of the guys I think nails it QBs is Greg Cosell of NFL films.Very thorough and that's all he does ... Doesn't do mocks, etc. This thread got me looking for how he does it... Here's what I found.."...a number of critical attributes essential to play the quarterback position at a championship level: quick progression reading, decision making, the willingness to make stick throws into tight windows, and accuracy...."Play at a championship level = Carry a football teamQuick progression readingDecision makingWillingness to make stick throws into tight windowsAccuracyIMO Glennon is mediocre in all of these categories as an NFL QB... Not sure how he played in college. Past is always the best indicator of future success. http://www.fieldgulls.com/2012/8/26/3269571/greg-cosell-quarterbacking-school-of-thought-russell-wilson

That's kinda funny when Greg has also pimped Mike Glennon quite a bit, so I'm kind of surprised you don't value his opinion more on Glennon.Link: http://tbo.com/sports/bucs/like-bucs-nfl-analyst-cosell-rated-qb-glennon-highly-b82485487z1 Link: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/greg-cosell-look-ahead-mike-glennon-done-very-021115946--nfl.html Link: http://thepewterplank.com/2013/04/30/mike-glennon-is-in-the-right-situation-with-the-tampa-bay-buccaneers/
No, I did/do value his opinion on MG. But at this point, I am not patient enough nor willing to risk him not being the guy. Hence the 3 qb answer
I like glennon as a person, but he's very vanilla on the football field. In a few years, he might be very good, but right now he may be a risk to lovie that he's not willing to take all on it's own. If they don't go all_in for manziel, hopefully they go after another qb in the later rounds.Whether or not so in so says what, imo, it would be very bad for lovie to just leave all his eggs in one basket like that. Even a backup role is needed, so to me, you have to grab a qb somewhere in this draft. That part I believe we can all agree on?

Glennon makes quick progressions and pulls the trigger on tight throws, and he did that in college. He was a lot more conservative later on in the season than he's probably ever been, but I blame that on playing better teams, him hitting the rookie wall, and just people having more tape on him. People started double covering Vjax and Wright and he was just lost.
I disagree with the premise of the article. 3 is not the worst choice because it is not a stand alone. I think our best option is to bring in one of the veterans and draft one if one we like is available where we pick. Personal feelings aside, I think this team has the highest ceiling possible next season with Mike Vick and Mike Glennon as the Buc's two quarterbacks. Even better if we had Murray (or someone like that in the 4th) stashed inactive. My dream scenario remains JFF at 7 with he and Glennon competing for the job. I'm not rolling into the draft banking on that and I'm not willing to give up what it would take to make it official. So give me a vet with Mike and a rook if he's a steal.
I'm of the opinion that the Bucs will pick a quarterback high in the draft, just not necessarily at #7. However, the only quarterback that I really like is Bridgewater, I haven't seen a lot of tape on Bortles or Carr and while I have watched Manziel, and admire his game, I worry about the whole 'superstar' side that comes with him. In the end, I think Manziel will be the 3rd quarterback taken and I think there is a good possibility he'll be there at #7. If the Bucs pick him, I'm fine with it because Smith and Tedford are basically putting their stamp on the guy as well. I also think that Glennon has some decent upside and Tedford, who has coached players with less talent (see Akili Smith) to quarterback stardom in college should like a lot that Glennon has to offer. Again, the smart move IMO is to build a offense, let Glennon attempt to run it and if he fails, you have a fallback position for the rest of the season. If he succeeds, then you have a player you can trade for value at a later date. The only question in my mind is if you grab a guy in the 1st or at the top of the 2nd, but I don't have any doubt that another quarterback is going to be drafted in April, no doubt at all.
Maybe trade for a Boller or a Carr, who know Tedford's offense from Cal, AND draft a QB on Day 2 or 3. Carry 3 QBs. The young ones learn from the older guy,and then battle it out between themselves this year and next. Just a thought.
