Watching Tom this year, he reminds me a lot of what Brad Johnson did for us -- but with a much stronger arm than Brad and so a better intermediate and deep ball. But for those old enough to remember, Brad was the calm leader and field general who scored enough to win -- and did not lose games through mistakes -- on a team with a a very strong defense. Brad might have been the most effective QB we ever had. Doug Williams and Jameis had bigger numbers, but also made a lot of mistakes.
At this stage of his career, Tom is probably 20% better than Brad was for us and our defense is probably 20% worse that our 2002 team, but overall, when our receivers are 100% healthy, I think by the end of the year we will be just as good as that 2002 team if not better. Unfortunately the rest of the league is stronger now, so getting far in the postseason will be a bigger challenge.
Of course on his best day, Tom is probably much better than Brad was for us, but even on his worst day if he can be as good or a bit better than Brad was, with this defense, we will win a ton of games.
