Anyway, hi everyone, and I look forward to getting to know some of you while we talk football for the next little while.
awesome
welcome
Baker has been capable of delivering a top-6 to 14 QB performance, imo. And that's with a new HC/OC/new teammates every season. What would he be capable of with some stability and continuity? I don't know for certain, obviously. But I think he could easily be a perennial top-10 QB, if he had continuity with his coaching and teammates.
Baker isn't Mahomes though. He can't just carry a team to the SB for a season. He needs a better than JAG running game, OL, defense and weapons to have a chance at leading a team to the playoffs. Like he did in 2020, when he led the Browns to an 11-5 record and their first playoff W in something like 30 years. And was one fumble by Higgins and Stefanski turtling up late in the game, from beating the Chiefs in the Divisional.
He has great-to-elite timing. You guys have seen those multiple times this season already. His ability to throw dots with anticipation, hitting receivers right after their breaks just inside the numbers or the hashes is something he's always had, and is a big part of his game. And there's not many QBs in the NFL better than Mayfield at those throws.
Baker has elite arm talent. I'd put him right behind Mahomes, Josh Allen, Stafford, Aaron Rodgers. In terms of arm talent and strength, not his overall game. Baker can throw it 60 yards, but he also can put it in exactly the right spots at that distance.
Baker has an eidetic memory, similar to Mahomes. He remembers every play. He remembers defensive alignments and tendencies exactly. That capability is what aowed him to make that TD pass to Godwin (iirc) in the GB game. he saw how they were aligned (which was poorly; GB's alignment was telling Baker that the deep middle would be 1v1 presnap), and he realized that Godwin could run a skinny post (or whatever that was) and be 1v1. Baker told Godwin, "hey, be ready, be ready!" and threw up that back shoulder throw, on time and pretty much perfectly placed where only Godwin could even get his hands on it.
In terms of his intanglibles, he has some flaws to his game, like his footwork on his dropbacks. Anything deeper than a three-step drop, and he does that hop-skip thing he does, that significantly shortens his drops, and that can create protection issues as well as sometimes creating problems with his passing lanes.
As we saw in the NFC-D game vs. DET last week. Pretty sure that last play was supposed to be a 5-step drop (at least), but he shortened it, allowing the pressure up the middle to get to him earlier than it should have, speeding up his clock, and it also created an issue with his passing lanes, so even if he had gotten his head around to the left in time, i was going to be a much tougher throw than it had to be had he been a couple yards deeper in the pocket, and allowed himself a cleaner set of passing lanes.
He also is what Kurt Warner described as a "pure progression" passer. He's a left-to-right (or vice versa) kind of QB. So he doesn't always make the right adjustments to whatever the defense shows him presnap. Again, using that last play from the NFC-D game, he probably should've recognized the pressure coming from his left and realized that he had to throw the hot behind the pass-rusher, instead of going through his reads on the right side. That one puzzled me a little, because I felt like that was one he should've seen.
He tends to be late surveying the pattern from one side of the field to the other. This has always been an issue for Baker, which makes him late finding receivers between the hashes when he has to get through 3+ reads going from one side to the other. Though i do believe that if he had some continuity in a single offense with most of the same receivers, that should improve.
Finally, he sometimes tries to fit balls in windows that he doesn't have to. When it works, it looks amazing, because he'll fit a ball between two defenders and laser dot a receiver with a perfectly placed ball right between the numbers in traffic 20 yards downfield. But again, using the NFC-D game, there was at least a couple times when he could've waited just a beat longer and the receiver would've uncovered for an easier throw, and maybe a better result. My opinion is that he's impatient, and he gets off on firing those laser beams past defenders. He likes showing off that arm. He needs to learn to be a little more patient at times.
I think Baker has most, if not all, the characteristics that a QB needs to win at the highest levels, but he's lacked continuity and stability that would've allowed him to grow properly. Having the unholy trinity of Tod Haley, Hue Jackson and Freddie Kitchens as a rookie didn't help him at all. Then he got Stenfanski, who didn't like Baker, and spent the next two seasons restricting Baker, instead of trying to adapt/work with him. In spite of that, Baker led them to a 11-5 record and came within literal inches and a holding call of beating KC in the 2020 AFC-D. Then last season happened. And th =e only thing to take away from last season is what he did in his first game with the Rams. When he led them to a W, with just 36 hours of prep time, the worst pass-pro OL in football, no running game, and his best WR was Skrowonski, otherwise known as Stone Hands, who is at best a WR5.
I think Baker could be the next Drew Brees, but with a stronger arm. I think he needs the continuity to get there, and that he's probably at least a couple seasons from that, but I think the potential is right there.
Okay, that was way longer than I intended. Here's what I would do if I were a TB fan. Go back and watch Payton Manning's analysis of Baker from 2019 on ESPN+. Then watch Kurt Warner's analyses of Baker; I think he's reviewed Baker's performances 3-4 times over his career. Ditto Chris Simms and JT Sullivan's QB School. Watch the tapes on YT. Baker has matured and become a better QB over his career and those tapes can prove it.
Bottom Line, I think Baker can be somewhere between the 6th and 12th best QB in the league every year, in the right situation with the right team. he just needs stability and an OC that believes in him.

Loved it. Points in there that I hadnt even considered. Thank you for the insight. I counter with this. Internally, this is what I have been hoping for for many years. I have given up on Us being able to draft OUR franchise QB. After letting Dough Williams and Steve Young and Trent DILFER(and t'dngy) GO in order to GO on to to with the Prize while waiving a different flag has cursed us from being able to draft one. We need to FIND one. We FOUND one in Brad Johnson and Chucky duo, and We Manufactured one by Bringing in BA and TB12. We need to manufacture this Again, resign Baller and marry him to SOMEONE (preferably to TBowles-again), but it is what it is. The question of ceiling is were my loon sIde takes over a bit, maybe too much Bias, but who cares right-YOLO- I disagree with you. Ill explain my thoughts and am open to scathing critique if warranted. I hide nothing about my thoughts. I agree, you nailed it...he is a tad impatient- He likes darting/doting the ball to a dot for a nice play, sometimes when he shoUld be patient, I hadnt seen it until you mentioned it, might lead to some sacks in addition to errant throws. The patience, developing that is difficult and is a Personal fight for us all on the daily, most fail miserable, some fortunates fail less often is all- more consistent even. No one can help him there, he has to win that one on hIs own. The other deficiencies are potentially fixable...better stated, They Are Coachable deficiencies. Step one get him a coach and allow him to work on those issues you mentioned and Id be willing to bet he comes back next year better than this one, he might have 1 or 2 games where he is great, which is also 1 or 2 less games that he could goof. No way to know unless you give the Guy a fair shake and a chance. As to his ceiling, your numbers, IMHO, 6th-12th could be correct...but U also compared him to Brees. Brees with the Chargers was a NOBODY and the Saints to a gamble on him and married him to Sean Payton, they worked for a few years and grew together...developed a consistent foUndatIon. The rest is hx. Brees is retired now, but Brees was NOT a 6-12 QB. I always ConsIdered Brees a top 5 Guy every year...Even during the Manning and Brady Prime Years, The ELI Manning/Strahan YEARS, The Russell Wilson gamble marriage to Pete Carroll years. I would take a Brees Type player without a hesitation, In fact, I think its our only way, we cant- or havent been ablet to- draft it or KEEP it (Williams Young). We have import a QB (Johnson TB12) and Import an impossible coach (Dungy, Chucky, AB) for a shot at a title. We came close in 1999, won it all in 2002. Then JL was a quiet home run pick for us. The same guy that brought us Aguayo is the same one who dumped him and IS Employing (thats him saying MEA CULPA) Chase. Sure JL has had some bad picks and moves, no doubt-but he's gett'in better, hes getting more consistently positive in the draft and in other GM related moves. He's growing. Good for him. Im sorry that the year ended like it did. Which brings me to Bowles, can we win a SUPERBOWL with him, not playoff games...the goal for any single year, isnt the playoff, its the TROPHY. Dungy didnt have it when he was here, he aquired it when he married Peyton Manning-a gamble 4 Indy at that time. Dungy couldnt crack the Stinking Iggles here in TB, he needed to grow further. Chucky was all fire, he blew his entire coaching wad in 2002 and hasnt been able to recover since- he had gotten close to the mountain a few times, but couldnt crack TB12, he had to come HERE to raise his trophy. He got Dumped as well, once it was obvious were were in a dark age...when we signed Ryan Leaf, thats scraping the bottom of the barrel, arguably the greatest bust in hx, the guy who (going into the draft) was better +/- than PEYTON MANNING, wow how wrong many turned out to be...the gambles sUmetImes backfIre. Even Monte left...
Listen, enough down memory lane. The only direction we can move in is forward. I say sign him and make sUmethIng work JL, figure out a way to keep whats Important and say goodbye to what Isnt. Give this guy some stability and he may be OUr version on Drew Brees, that dude was a Real One.
Yeah, when I said Baker could be the next Brees, it meant in terms of his play, not necessarily where he’d rank year-to-year. I think he could be similar in his style; great timing passer over the middle, excellent accuracy between the numbers on short- to intermediate-range throws, that has the ability to go over the top with dimes outside between the 30s. Just has to read his situations better, and be a little more patient.
Couple other points: when I say he could be Brees, that comes with the caveat that he’s got a little Favre in him as well. He’s always going to take some shots; and sometimes they won’t work.
as a Chiefs fan with Mahomes, I’ve gotten used to that. Every season Pat will have a half or a game or even two, that are just stinkers. His footwork on his drops aren’t the best, his overall mechanics on a lot of his throws are awful, and sometimes he gets happy feet. At this point I know these are issues Mahomes will always have, and I just need to get over it.
so Baker will have a bad game or two every year; it’s just part of his baggage. But he’ll also bail the team out a couple times a year, and deliver some true gems as well. But he’ll probably never be as consistently consistent as Brees was in his prime, because he’ll always want to play hero ball on some level. It’s just hard-wired into him.
Great post. Thanks for taking the time
Hey Thx.
Trying to be a good guest.
While I'm at it, I'll let you guys know this: I'm probably not going to comment much on the FO, ownership or Bowles while I'm here. It's your team, and I don't have the knowledge of your team's infrastructure to make those kinds of comments. Even though I live in AZ, and I have some experience with both Arians and Bowles, it was a long time ago, and I don't think that's really my place here. Call me an interested bystander. I know a little about some of your personnel besides Baker, like Evans, Godwin, Wirfs, Antoine Winfield and Lavonte David (sp?), and that's about it. So my opinions/comments will be limited to Baker and a few of the players; maybe a little about coaching decisions in-game, but that's all. If it matters, I'll even agree to stay out of the GDTs.
Anyway, thx for the welcome, appreciate you.

Lots of typos mea culpa, I wouldnt want Tbowles to be the one charged with molding him

Ill take Brees "like-in terms of play" any day!!!! Until not too long ago he and TB12 were playing "pass the record book" in terms of total career yards and total career touchdowns. Not bad company. Brees had more TD's and yards that Peyton Im fairly sure...Id (gamble on) sign potential like that and stake enough to bring a smile to his face lighting that fire hoping I see his consistent A game for a few years.
Remember Brees was a second round pick that got sold by the Chargers (IIRC) for a bag of chips after he suffered a "serious" injury. They replaced him with Phillip Rivers, Nice QB- but no Brees. Brees was also a Real One and was always considering others needs before his own. He was the one carrying the team, but I bet he always ate....last. Selflessness is both a boon and a curse.

No worries; I think I figured it out, lol.
As I posted above, I'm hesitant to comment much on Bowles. I thought he was a good DC in AZ, if a little too aggressive at times. But that was some time ago, and I can't really say I followed him much after he left AZ. As a HC, the only thing I would say is that during the NFC-D he was a little conservative at times, like that 4th-and-short down around the 50 when he punted. I thought he should've gone for that one. But what do I know. If a couple passes are caught and not dropped, maybe that decision doesn't seem as consequential.

I think that Baker could be 75%-80% of Brees given stability and the foundation I spoke of above (running game, OL, etc.). Brees was just a genius at presnap reads/adjustments and protecting the ball in general. Baker will always be a bit of gunslinger, so even though he'll be better throwing deep, he's also going to put the ball at risk at times, a la Brett Favre. But you can't win the SB without having a QB that will take some risks to make a big play. Baker has both the ability and the mentality to execute those kinds of plays, but they can also backfire, so you have to take the good with the bad there, imo.
Great post. Thanks for taking the time

Let me catch you up to speed some, if only so you have a bit more context.
IMHO- JL isa GM that was "came across" during the dark ages and I think he and Lovie or maybe Schiano started together. Fair first few years, mixed bag, but even with all his misses he was able to HIT upon some future HOFers IMHO. Mike Evans- HOF'er, Tristan Wirfs Future Hall Of Famer. He Missed Epically on Jameis Winston- cant be all honey and milk all the time. He brought us Vita Vea- who knows, perhaps top 5 interior dlinemen-perrenially, the rook CK who looks special, a Future HOF Punter (Im calling that ONE NOW!). The best kicker (CHASE) weve had since before Automatica Lost his Groove with that miss (Dilfer days, vs the Iggles i think?) AW31-my personal favorite defender, reminds me of Ronde Barber but the safety version Future Hall of Famer (Im calling that NOW), He has been instrumental in Keeping Future Hall of Famer (or will he be disrespected yet again) Lavonte David, finding Chris Godwin, who is mI personal favorite WR-I like his Attitude and reliability, He has been able to find some real gems in the draft, especially Olinemen. Wirfs is obvious, but there was a guy named Ali Marpet who was like almost Wirfs good, but as a guard and center-he also role swapped. Alex Cappa fairly solid mean, Cody Mauch and Goedecke (role sawp again) who have flashed some potential. Outside of the draft, He canned Lovie Smith and Brought AB out of retirement, then he went out and tried to draft a franchise QB-Winston-Swing and a miss- So he canned the 1st overall pick and BROUGHT THE GOAT out of retirement to manufacture a SB as a GM- He outgamed every GM that year, and almost did it again the very next year- It was just Staffords Due, it was his time...fate, after that the Ooful (Oof + Aweful= Ooful) offseason when TB and Gisele divorced-anyone see that coming...not me. The the retirement unretirement, Arians "rift", buying the dolphins to remarry with Sean Payton....and on and on. JL had to keep the boat afloat, Hes the first mate, its his duty to keep the ship afloat. And against ALL odds, he brought a journey man QB here and gave him a shot. Im smelling another homerun, but thats just me, Im inherently biased, as are we all. Its both a boon and a curse.
Bowles. Head coach. His ambition is further than his reach. His reach is DC, at his best...playing Aggressively, "appropriately ambitious game planning." Hes better suited at fulfilling that role being only in charge of his "lane" not carry the entire team. With that much weight, his "reach" is turtle/vanilla/bend'dont break, while his ambition is risk'it'no'biscuit...its inconsistent. IMHO he is who he is, and he doesnt gamble when his life is on the line. Hed rather not get up to the plate and swing the bat-you know, a "punchers chance" hed rather forfeit and brush it off as the right thing to do,...the Lions game was over to him. He was safe just getting to the playoffs, he rode the teams coat'tail all the way to job security against the Carolina Panthers, then he celebrated by having alittle fun and seeing "what if" against a Titan Iggles team, but they were wounded, and we were getting HOT. So we crushed them, annihilated them, There has been an asz kicking like that since Wade Wilson messed up FRANCIS. Im sure that night his home felt nice and cozy, he was toasting his success. Then we had to play the Lions, now- it wasnt a wounded bird, it was a Lion in its prime. Heres a secret. A LION CANNOT DEFEAT A WELL PREPARED BUCCANEER....why, you ask. A Buccaneer has a brain and a GUN, a lion and only run at you and pounce-just shoot it. But we didnt, he put nice guns in the hands of all his "warriors" (concepts are moving into more abstraction here) but left all the bullets at home. Baker and ME tried there best to play the Lion, but how could they if the Leader wont even challenge the Refs, doesnt get more aggressive as the Lions knees (oline) became wounded- SWEEP THE LEG JOHNNY-Be TEAM COBRA Kai...theres no apologizing to Ben Rapethburger for "almost bumping him." You call a time out. I have never in my life "flip flopped...wishy-washied" anything faster in my life than my opinion on Bowles as a leader of men. I thought he had it when he went for 2 points- the wrong call, but BALLZ, STOP THEM and win in regulation- Ties are for LOSERS. Even though it didnt work out, I applauded the guts and was ok going into the offseason with some fire in our belly, tape and deficiencies to correct, and run it back next year.
But then, even after failing the 2 point conversion-which a BS call IMHO-It should have been game over then. The Lions run out the clock and its game over. But, as fate should have it, Goff Goofed again-Bigtime! He was impatient and left approximately 6 seconds on the clock for us to make a miracle happen. The Bucs would HAVE 1 more shot- FATE made Goof GIVE US ONE BULLET-ONE CHANCE TO SLAY IT, it would take a miracle tho- I see miracles daily, They usually manifest through SHEER WILL, though- thats OUR part to play in the miracle. Anyhoo, Bowles Decided to leave the Bullet in the gun rather than swing for a home run. He preferred to lay down and be devoured by the LION. Hes not My coach anyway. Thats my biased opinion.
Sorry its a bit long winded and I interweave symolism and odd use of fonts/italics/etc to add emphasis to certain important points. Often, there are many important points. Then mix in at least 20% unintentional typos and its typically unreadable. TLDR. JL BECOMING MORE Awesome each year. Players- we got some REALLY good ones, some of which are not household name...even LVD and AW13 and criminally neglected outside Tampa BAE. We also have a running back that is starting to find his place in the NFL. I hope that our new OC uses White as a pass catching Yac guy first (better stated 1A), runner slasher second (1B). I would try and approximate the way the Rams used Faulk, but White isnt nearly as fast or quick or nimble....but his BIGGER and Meaner. I think we could make something like that work, especially if Godwin is throwing blocks for him...pain city for DB's and Safeties. As For Bowles-Ive said enough to, hopefully, make myself crystal clear on my biased opinion.
Almost forgot, the Owners. Glazers. Their dad bought the Bucs and was the First Captain to turn the ship around and get out of the sewers. He, thankfully, got to hold up our first trophy before he died. But his sons are no SLOUCHES, they may not have brought Dungy or Brad Johnson or Chucky or Warren Sapp or Derrick Brooks...but they Brought Jason Licht, who brought in Bruce and the Tom and then the Glazer sons-Ballz-Where the first to ever hoist a Trophy in their own home. The thing about them is, they also own another team. A soccer team, its a big cash cow I've heard, AND most importantly...very very private. These guys are NOT Jerry Jones, Bob Kraft, Al Davis, Tepper. They know how to handle house business behind closed doors. Bravo, they also have a guy that manages the money as best he can, guys name is Greenberg, mixed reviews, but the Ship is still afloat-so little to complain about.
There, you should have enough bullets to at least ask follow up questions for additional insight or clarification to develop your own viewpoints on the matter. or just stay out of it completely, your Guy P'Ma is about to (or will he-gotta play the games) get fitted for another ring, ur busy. Enjoy this- with that being said, for the sake of "change of pace" Im rooting for the 9rs, one of OG Real ONES is the GM there, I respect that guy- I watched him give his own Cousin a concussion (He would have called time out). If the Cheifs win every year, football becomes boring. TB in Foxboro almost flirted with making NFL rote and boring. Teams in the AFC were screwed as long at the TITANIC Patriots were led by TB. Thankfully a few Giants, a Seahawk, a Saint, and a few others mixed it up.
