What will be on the Bucs’ minds next offseason? Extending Mayfield will be at the top of the list, and it won’t be cheap. Safe to say the Bucs won’t want to let Baker get to the end of the contract. Whatever he’s trying to prove, he’ll prove it this year. Baker’s next contract will be the defining deal of his career. It’s his time to get paid, and Licht has shown he’s not afraid to open his wallet. There won’t be a Dak Prescott mistake in Tampa Bay.
Remember when Mayfield was sure to set the team back with a $40 million per contract!
Brock Purdy has signed a five-year contract extension worth $265 million with the San Francisco 49ers. This deal includes $181 million in total guarantees, with $165.05 million guaranteed in the first three years of the contract. The average annual value (AAV) of the contract is $53 million, making him one of the highest-paid players in NFL history
Not bad for the second coming of Shaun King.
This is a hilarious take (I mean that in a good way), and pretty interesting comparison. It’s absurdly provocative enough to make me seriously consider it.Brock Purdy has signed a five-year contract extension worth $265 million with the San Francisco 49ers. well, we shouldn't touch Baker's contract this off-season
let's see how the 2025 season goes.
he has another 40 TD season and Bucs playoff birth and yeah he's looking at $45-$55M per year.
I mean, look at guys that are $55m - Jordan Love and Trevor Lawrence. Tua, Herbert and Golf are at $53M. Purdy at $53M. Inflation is real dog
But yeah, Bucs should be in no rush because what if Baker regresses somehow to Cleveland Baker and Bucs go like 7-10....ehhh...maybe we pump the breakers on that extension.
But yeah, Bucs should be in no rush
Most of the contract discussions here are strange if you look at the context of having a great GM, a team that star players want to play for and, as far as I can recall never really losing a player they wanted to keep over a contract.
that's why I mentioned all the $40 million angst. It was about nothing. They got a fair deal with him and even $40 (a pretty weak internet rumor at the time) is probably not that bad now.
It will all work out

It was actually a barb at the Red Board GM who attempted to belittle Purdy and what he's done in the league by saying he was only as good as Shaun King.
I think Purdy is pretty clearly better than Shaun King, but I - nor anyone else - is as good at analyzing the analytics as the Red Board GM.
pretty interesting comparison
John Lynch would be in a pretty good position to know, right?
How's he going to regress? It would be because he tried to do too much because of problems elsewhere, trying to come back from deficits piled up because of the defense. We already know what Baker will do to make up for a deficit. He'll try to be Superman and it'll probably backfire. He isn't Patrick Mahomes. So how about if the rest of the team does it's job? If that happens then Baker will win games for you and that's why you pay him.well, we shouldn't touch Baker's contract this off-season

The only thing that would give me pause to resign Baker is his willingness to put his body on the line. I'd put a clause in the contract to deduct $1 million every time he crosses the line of scrimmage and takes on a linebacker. Cool highlight. Shoulder injury- not cool.
We know what Baker is. We know what the market is, especially in light of the Purdy contract. We know the Bucs love Baker. I'm pretty confident that my prediction won't be too far off..
In 2024 Purdy had a QBR of 67.9 even with the 49's offence being decimated by injuries.Brock Purdy has signed a five-year contract extension worth $265 million with the San Francisco 49ers. Mayfield has a QBR of 61.6. Yes the Bucs did have some injuries, but not nearly as bad as the 49's.
I think "second coming of King" implies that Purdy is not good, just surrounded by talent. Shanahan is supposedly an offensive genius. He doesn't seem to agree. Neither does Lynch, who played with King, right?
I am not sure why the comparison matters though because Purdy's actually contract is sort of going rate?
The 49ers need a QB. They have one. They kept him
-
1. Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott: $60 million
-
2. Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow: $55 million
-
2. Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen: $55 million
-
2. Green Bay Packers QB Jordan Love: $55 million
-
2. Jacksonville Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence: $55 million
-
6. Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa: $53.1 million
-
7. Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff: $53 million
-
7. San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy: $53 million
Niners are gonna be fucked because of Purdy's contract. So I love it

Biggsy’s faux comparison kind of rattled my thinking a bit. He’s clearly better than King, but it gets at the basic idea that competent QB’s, with an elite attributes (or a couple of combinations of elite attributes) can be utilized in an offense that maximizes their performance, especially with the right talent around them.
Biggs just caught me off-guard, I hadn’t read the “Red Board GM’s post, when I read Shawn King… it did the trick!
Brock Purdy is playing in a different era than Shaun King... And King was part of an anemic offense.
Purdy is clearly better but King never sniffed a big contract like Purdy just got.
Put Purdy on the Browns and he does nothing
