I don't see much difference (if any) between the technique used by Chancellor and Goldson...I think refs use Goldson as some sort of "example" since he has the history of personal fouls.
The difference is when Chancellor hits someone, he's generally playing respectable coverage, near the receiver, and doesn't have to launch into the receiver. Goldson "covers" receivers with a lot more distance in between them, so when he's hitting someone, he's flying in from 10 yards away and launches himself.

+1Completely accurate assessment. Goldson could get better under the new staff, but he has said he doesnt need to change how he plays because it got him where he is. It starts with him wanting to be a more complete player.
peolple hate our safeties because they are not the best covered safeties in the NFL. but I'm willing to bet that if it were the other way around and not be able to tackle in a phone booth people would still be criticizing them. Thomas didn't come to the NFL as a difference maker. don't get me wrong he was solid his first couple years but it took some time for him to get to where he's at, Kam Chancellor was nowhere near Barrons status in college and it took him time to understand the game. so lets give our guys some damn time to learn the D and gell . y'all want HOFers from their rookie year it aint happening
Goldson isn't as good as Thomas.Barron isn't as good as Chancellor. So no.
Pretty much. They may be comparable in the hitting department but aren't close in the coverage department.
Goldson isn't as good as Thomas, but Barron I disagree on Barron not being as good as Chancellor. Barron is more physically talented than Chancellor, and deserves a bit more time to learn the game especially after our questionable schemes last year. Even with that Barron got a lot better last year. The Bucs should sign Byrd, who is in the same class as Thomas. Goldson would have trade value, especially if we pay his $3 million roster bonus and only leave $6 million guaranteed on his contract. Lot's of teams need a talented safety.
The whole Goldson thing has just been so disappointing this year. I was so excited when we signed him. I thought it very strange how little we heard about him in preseason. Didn't think much of it but soon realized that he wasn't having an impact of any sort and that is why we didnt hear anything about him. I don't believe Tandy is a good replacement but the guy had 3 picks to Goldson 1 and had about half the playing time. That's not a pat on the back for Tandy, it's an indictment for Goldson.Just so so disappointed with Goldson so far.
Annoys me how many of our fans hate Barron and want to wrIte him off already , despite all the flashes he's shown in a horrible scheme...

Its mostly the Kuechly nut huggers. They wont get over it. Barron made great progress in season 2, even with the college coaching staff we put together.

Agree

One is legal and the other isn't. The argument that they use him as an example is silly because how did he get the personal foul calls to have a history unless he was creating personal fouls? You've heard him say over and over and over that he won't change what he's doing. He was getting flagged then, he is getting flagged now. He doesn't need to change.....
There is a big difference between the two. There is a reason that Goldson has been one of the most penalized players in the leagues over the past 3-4 years, and it isn't because the refs are picking on him. Kam comes in and actually sees what he is hitting. Goldson does not. You could pull up 100s of screenshots where Goldson is looking directly at the ground and striking with the crown of his helmet right before impact. While it isn't illegal for a defender to do this, it does put you in a position to either helmet to helmet contact, or friendly fire on a teammate.

I think most here would be willing to say that Barron will see improvement. The problem is Goldson. He isn't going to change. Also on the "not be able to tackle in a phone booth" comment, Goldson has had problems with missed tackles over the years. There were several seasons where he led the 9ers secondary in missed tackles, and he continued to miss them in pewter and Buc red. Goldson is a thumpers, but he doesn't do much of anything else very well. Poor in coverage/average tackler/penalty machine. Definitely one of the most overpaid and overrated players in the NFL today.

Look harder. Chancellor doesn't launch himself head first like Goldson does. Now Chancellor is bigger than most WRs and RBs. So he doesn't need to necessarily launch himself. He's strong enough to bring a good, clean, legal hit.

The worst thing that has been said about Barron in this thread is that he isn't as good as Chancellor. Most of the "hate" is being directed at Goldson.

How dare people acknowledge a player not picked by the Bucs has been clearly superior to a player picked by the Bucs.

He's better.. We didn't pick him. Get over it.
