Bears Game versus Falcons Game

Obviously very different games because the Bears suck and the Falcons do not, but if you compare the two you get some insight into WHERE the Bucs want to go on offense (Bears) versus where the actually are (Falcons).

The Bears game is a 27 point production by the offense on a run-pass play split that was 34 runs out of 68 plays, so almost 50/50.

Yesterday, the Bucs were a very Leftwich/Brady-like team with 20 runs to 65 plays, almost exactly the 2022 split of 65/35, even though they were in the game.

The NUMBER one task in the offseason plan for a team that was 35/65 run-pass AND losing its GOAT QB . . .  would've been to shore up the run game, but the Bucs didn't do that BECAUSE the Bucs are rebuilding and shaking off $ issues. So, they didnt go out to get a proven back, they elevated our back-up/3rd down back.  They didnt shore up the line, they pieced a line together.

They hoped to have our C come back (even though VEY unlikely) and committed to his back up, if not.  They made a G a RT and a journeyman tackle (recently turned G) into our other G and matched that with a rookie. They did NOT upgrade the TE position.

That deficit shows up against GOOD TEAMS . .  just like last year

Call this offseason the Brady Bill (paying the price for the Brady years). Lipstick on a pig for a year or more

Canales has the right idea . . .  but may never get a chance to implement it . . . here

How many years does anyone think it would take to improve our OL? I believe we have our tackles set for the future. Could we improve our IOL by 2 in one year, or perhaps 2 years? Would it take more than 3 years? I'm only asking because I know diddly squat about dead cap/salary cap issues.

Great question.

This is the scope of the challenge:

"Heading into Sunday’s game, left guard Matt Feiler had a 59.7 Pro Football Focus grade, including a 53.4 run blocking grade. Center Robert Hainsey is on par with an equally bad 57.4 grade. Rookie right guard Cody Mauch is even worse with a 42.5 PFF grade and an awful 34.2 run blocking grade."

Mauch looks like a bust but so did Cappa and Goedeke.

Both improved.

I just look at Mauch and he looks small and stubby via the eye ball test.

We gotta shake our dead cap tho... Jensen and Gage are killing us.

Need to get Leverett in at LG, as he’s a way better run blocker in zone vs. gap, and Feiler has been ass.

If Mauch is overwhelmed that would be pretty normal so definitely don't want to give up on him yet.  Says more about the Bucs than him that he's out there. The Brady bill is due!
