ESPN's Coaching Staffs rankings:
26. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Head coach: Todd Bowles
Offensive coordinator: Josh Grizzard
Defensive coordinator: Kefense Hynson
2024 ranking: 22Come with me to a magical land in which Liam Coen actually stayed as the Bucs' OC this season (too soon, Bucs fans?) They'd probably be 12th or 13th on this list -- maybe even higher. It'd be much easier to look beyond Bowles, a cautious game manager who regularly settles for field goals and extra points when he should hunt touchdowns and two-point conversions, if Coen's rockstar offense were returning. But it isn't, so those little margins from the head coach glare all the more.
I'm very excited to see what Grizzard, who has the vibe of a whiz kid, does at the helm. Last year's passing game coordinator, he had a huge hand in the Buccaneers' league-leading third-down offense and spent some time under Mike McDaniel (the whizziest kid himself) in Miami before he joined the Buccaneers' staff last season. Color me intrigued.
But even if Grizzard has the goods, it will be difficult to replicate just how prolific the Buccaneers' offense was last season. Tampa needs more from Bowles' in-game decision-making, and he needs more from his defense. Tampa gave up more than 2.0 points per drive last season for the first time since 2019, Bowles' first year as defensive coordinator. Against the pass, their 0.11 EPA surrendered per dropback was the worst for any Bowles defense since the 2016 Jets.

26th! Jesus! i'd argue he could be as high as 15th, maybe closer to 20; but 26 damn...
just says alot about the Bucs as a franchise that this dude's about to get a statue built out infront of Raymond James and he's not a great coach at all lol
Ben may be may be right. We will see soon enough!
If you know his work (data, analytics) he's not going to be a fan of conservative, defense-oriented etc., but funny because he said the Bucs are NFC Super Bowl contenders, just behind below the Eagles, with the Lions and Rams.
And he JUST applauded the extensions for Bowles and Licht calling Bowles and GOOD head coach and a GREAT defensive coach who will turn things around from last year's injury-impacted season

Its how he starts the show, so its right in the beginning.
The perils of content, content and more content. lol. And offseason rankings.
lol at 26th. I will make the argument that Carberry was the reason our O was so successful last season. We finally have an Oline coach who can truly coach. He’s still with us. Grizz will be more agressive with his play calling overall. Ask Campbell and Sirianni where Bowles ranks as a coach. Puts those Nancys in a box on the regular. Lolz at 26. Someone is pretty lazy.
26th, wow. Worse than I thought.
But he's right about a lot of things. Bowles didn't do the team any favors with his overly conservative in-game decisions; the fact that he decided that he was going to go for the tie and lay the game at his defense's feet IF TB got into a OT or go for 2 scenario at the end of the KC game speaks volumes. And that his defense was consistently unable to make stops throughout the season (depicted quite well in those EPA stats) make it tough to make a counterargument. He's like this decade's version of Marty Schottenheimer. He's just too reluctant to put the responsibility for winning games on the offense, to his undoing many times.

One of these things are not like the others...
Campbell Regular Season Winning Percentage - .556% (Playoff Winning Percentage - .500%)
Nick Sirianni Regular Season Winning Percentage - .706% (Playoff Winning Percentage - .667%)
Todd Bowles Regular Season Winning Percentage - .449% (Playoff Winning Percentage - .250%)
Love your optimism and "rah rah" mentality, but Bowles isn't in the same category of these guys.
Bowles had a better winning percentage with the Jets than any HC they've had since then. Those other guys never had to coach the Jets. Lets stick with his record with the Bucs which is 53%. Still not as good as Campbell's, but as I've argued before this will be a challenging year for Campbell who has never been a coordinator on either side of the ball. Campbell's over/under is 10.5 wins. With two coordinators with no experience in that position and a HC who's never been a coordinator either I'm not a buyer. If he gets 11 wins this year I'll give him the credit he's due regardless of the playoff results. But I'm putting my dollar on the under.Ask Campbell and Sirianni where Bowles ranks as a coach.

The Bucs will have a better record than the Lions this year.

Typical strange use of stats. . . without context.
The Eagles and Lions are near the top teams in the NFL during the Bowles HC window (2022-2024). For example, the eagles were in a Super Bowl and then won a Super bowl, in that window. The lions have been great, but arguably underperforming in the playoffs.
The Bucs have been rebuilding and overcoming cap.
In that window (lmao at including jets stats), the Bucs are 2-1 against the Eagles and 1-2 against the Lions? We beat the Eagles lasts season. They won a Super bowl. We beat the Lions IN DETROIT
Thats in the same category. Its doing more with less. On this board there is a discussion about the Bucs roster ranked 12th, I think? . . . some agree, some seem to think that might be too high, some think ranking are silly (this coaching ranking is by a guy who said the opposite a month ago). In that ROSTER ranking the Eagles and Lions are 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
Those guys may be better coaches, but the argument . . lmao.
Those other guys never had to coach the Jets.
True. Dan Campbell is coaching the perennial Super Bowl contending Detroit Lions.

.375 winning percentage.
I see the "We Love Mediocrity" crowd has a new participation trophy to put on their mantle.

Okay, we'll cherry pick it for you, to make Bowles stats look better.
Oh, wait, it's still worse than the other 2 guys.
Let's check the playoff percentages. Oh, yeah, still the same.
Wonder what everyone else thinks about Todd as HC versus Sirianni and Campbell:

And, while Sirianni has been to 2 Super Bowls (including a win) in the past 3 seasons; Todd is clearly better because "hE's dOnE mOrE wItH lEsS".

Sirianni took over a team that won the Super Bowl a few years earlier. And, as you said, has since taken them to two others - including one win.
Bowles took over a team that won the Super Bowl a few years earlier. The Super Bowl appearances, and win, have yet to happen.

Todd is much better as the Buc’s head coach than he was as the Jet’s winning percentage wise.
I have to assume Sirianni can coach. I view Roseman as currently the best in the game on the GM side. Not sure Licht is too far behind but results are results.
Campbell on the other hand. He couldn’t have been in bigger sweet spot to grab eternity than he was last year. He blew it. Not the injuries, not the Rypien like statue of a QB they have, not the division they play in….he, Dan Campbell blew it. So now the Detroit Lions are unquestionably worse than they were this time last year. No Ben, no Glenn, and a team that will experience a let down as their division is getting better.
Bowles will be graded on this season, like Campbell was on last season. This is the best Tampa team personnel wise since 2021.
