any reason we don't sign this guy immediately?

March 9-11 is the legal tampering period.

March 11 4 PM. Teams can sign free agents.

Will the Bucs be active? If they are not, the Bucs will be tanking. Not enough draft picks to fill all the holes.

Would think he can sign immediately given he was released, no?

"Tanking" is a loaded word in the NFL.  In the NBA a team can flat out tank.  But in the NFL tanking usually happens after the season gets going and teams realize they just don't have it.  And even then they aren't trying to lose.  Take the Saints.  They were tanking, but they have a good coach and managed to win six games. The Cardinals, Jets and Raiders all had visions of success at the start of the year, but as the year went along the reality set in.  Do you think Pete Carrol would tank?

The Bucs managed to be one of the worst teams in the NFL for the last half of last season without anyone accusing them of tanking.  So I'm not saying they won't suck.  But Jason Licht is never going to plan to lose.  Bowles isn't going to try to lose himself out of a job.  What do you mean when you say the Bucs will be tanking?  Do you think they'll try to get the top draft pick?

Again, the sheer stupidity of fans thinking we are tanking.  No team is too far off from competing as shown by the Patriots this past season.  It's such a casuals/trolls/idiots stance to think we are going into a season in a billion dollar industry with one thing in mind, losing....

And for what??? A chance to draft Arch fucking Manning???

yeah i dont think the Bucs will tank on purpose, we have too much talent as it is for that...

but they can also take the approach of not trying....as we saw for most of the dead cap space Post Brady era.  Meaning, no significant free agent pick-ups.  They tried last year with the Reddick signing but if we have another "barely add talent" offseason or one where we let our own talent go....like a Mike Evans; than yes....it wont be a "tank" per se...but it will be a ...."listen we brought Bowles back, we are going to build through draft with limited investment outside of that and you will be happy with the 7 to 10 wins you get this year...and you will like it"

"Tanking" is sort of the fan way of looking at things.  If you don't see the team as capable of winning a Super Bowl the season is lost before it starts! Might as well blow it all up!!

Tanking does happen in the NBA.  Teams take on expiring contracts in exchange for draft picks. They're having a cow over there right now because there are too many tanking teams.  But in the NFL it's up to the GM to tank, because the coaches and players are never going to do it.  Coaches can't afford to put together two or three losing seasons in a row, and for the players every move they make is permanently recorded for reference in the next contract negotiation.

The GM can effectively tank the season, but would Jason Licht ever do that?  I don't think so.  He's not taking over another guys team. These are his players. He'll get rid of a guy here or there, but wholesale changes?  I don't think so.

We certainly have proven to be inept at drafting pass rushers over the past…50 years?

Chubb Hendrickson Crosby I hope we make a splash somehow.

Bowles job depends on it.

Miami in full-blown rebuild mode.

Interesting to see what they end up doing with Tua.

I'm only interested in him if he can drop into coverage, like all the elite edge rushers are asked to do.

Honestly, we dont really have much available to trade.

so even in a rebuild, you want to keep guys like Wirfs and AWJ so to me, the only guys that you'd trade would be older which would be Godwin or Vea

and since Godwin likely has no trade value, you keep him.

to me, if they dont resign Evans and they dont sign an edge guy like Chubb or get a Crosby or sign a Hendrickson; then you might as well trade Vea.

Evans + dominate edge guy + solid draft + some free agency mid level guys = 11 wins next year

No Evans = deduct 2-3 wins

so....if you are looking at another 8 wins, then you might as well just trade Vea

whether we win 7 or 8 or 9 games, not sure it matters.  Sure would like to make playoffs but we weren't even on the same playing field as the Rams post Halloween.  When you assess this team, you can't look at the one that beat the Seahawks and 49ers in back to back weeks.  You need to look at what they were the majority of the year and most recent half of the year and it was not good....at all.

I'd have to go back and look but I think one reason SR used AWJ as an example in the Fab5 was balancing his impact on the field with impact on the cap/cash budget, so the question being how much is the dropoff from drafting a player (or picking up a FA) relative to AWJ's $27 million salary? Especially if you have Smith maybe more suited for the AWJ role then a deep safety.

Hard to imagine because he is a leader, but . .
