Kim Klement-USA TODAY SportsWell before the Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted Jameis Winston there were mentions of some former Bucs mentoring the quarterback to make sure he'd manage to keep out of trouble off the field. Specifically, Derrick Brooks was mentioned a lot. And now, it seems that Brooks confirmed as much to Ian Beckles on 620 WDAE, with Beckles noting that Brooks is going to meet with Winston every day.JoeBucsFan has the transcript:"He's going to meet with Jameis every day when [Jameis] comes back to Tampa," Beckles said of Brooks. "That's never happened in the history of the NFL, where somebody takes their time to mold somebody, and Derrick said the same thing I've been saying the whole time, ‘Jameis Winston is used to success his whole career, which is cool. The second he fails, how is he going to deal with it?' And that's going to be the most important thing."This kind of contradicts Lovie Smith's post-draft comments, when he noted that the Bucs weren't going to bring in any mentors."I've heard an awful lot about mentors and different people we are going to bring in to help out," Smith said at the time. "No we are not bringing anyone in. We don't really need any mentors or anything like that. [..] we wouldn't bring anyone in that needs to be babysat or anything like that. That's not the case with Jameis."So far, though, Brooks' mentoring seems to be paying off. Winston hasn't gotten into any real off-field trouble since being drafted, and he hasn't been in the spotlight much. The reviews out of OTAs were all positive, and he's now working with his teammates on his off days. So far so good.link
