@alldaway 💯 %. We lacked playaction all season. We showed it most against Seattle and look at how the offense played that day. And I stated last offseason, my biggest worry with Grizzard was that he wanted to bring in more of a vertical aspect to the offense. That’s not Baker’s strength.
Coen was willing to take risks with the passing game right from the start, adapting to what the defense offered
Unfortunately, Bowles…err…Grizz did not.

I was told by JC that Coen abandoned the run game way too often... That plus a jet sweep fumble are why he wouldn't be a good coach and def not take one of the worst franchises to a 13 win season.

Mayfield can play vertical passing game but it has to be married with play action. Forcing a vertical game without play action was never going to work because Mayfield is more Jeff Garcia and a lot less Brad Johnson.

Pretty good article on ESPN on how transformed the Jags from 4-13 to 13-4 in one season.

Would be in the playoffs right now if the Glazers would've done the right thing.
Good for him though. Rooting for him in the playoffs. Tough first game though.
White over tucker and irving on 3rd and short scenarios, white was money on about all short yardage situations. Biggest gripe i had as the skid started. Pretty much alienated him out when there is plenty of value for a longer bigger 3rd down back. He shouldn't be leaving Tampa, forcing carries to tucker in goal situations wasnt the move.
Playcalling felt like it was called to be called, and weren't called into defenses enough from what i saw. Had some bad moments where we would go into bunch formation and guys look lost coming out of their routes on got to have it downs. He needed more man beaters(his best calls are Y cross), we had alot of man beaters in 2024 that goes into finerdetails of spacing and rubs. Gone away from a lot of things we did successful from 2024, though the line was injured our screen game was not there and the small things of spacing was as efficient.
Just been watching a lot of our 2024 season and jags 2025 season lately. Coen really had more command of the offense to the finer details and the playcalling into the looks he wanted expecting what was coming from the defense.
Alot of the success early on was Baker magic and once it ran out there were too many hitches in Bakers drops which led to sacks, needed guys to be schemed open, but it felt too inconsistent.
Coen over Bowles for HC was likely never a real thing. Opportunity cost is a very real thing in the NFL.
Coen's success with the Jags has been really impressive because he went from offense to whole team and AFTER a bunch of film created with the Bucs and I dont think he has that much of a QB to work with.
Our run game was fire with Coen calling the plays. Grizz just didnt have a good feel for calling the right plays at the right time, Coen was a master at that.
I think Grizzard did well early on but I think when the tendencies showed and he didn't have the comfort of his passing concepts bread and butter it got harder because he put it on film. But also when we became "the man" everyone was gunning for us. He'll get his shot again with this being a valuable learning experience
Grizzard set up several skinny posts for EE that were daggers against the Texans and Falcons. And the play action against the Seahawks gave Mac fits. The Bucs offense when it was firing and Grizzard was dialing up was on fire against the Falcons, Texans and Seahawks.
I think what happened was that Grizzard's play calling for ball control style of offense was lacking and I am not talking about run game because the passing game can be an extension of ball control.
Lack of play action was the doing in of Grizzard because he deviated away from what worked for him early in the season and asked Mayfield to do too much in the passing game.
For a rookie OC Grizzard showed more success overall than Canales. However, Canales tailored his offense game plan to change week to week with the opponent in mind with more success. Despite Mayfield looking up down for most of the season it started to click for him as the season went on in Canales system. It was the opposite with Grizzard and maybe Grizzard is a victim of bad timing in multiple ways.
But for this offense to move forward we need a return to play action and a more dynamic run game that augments that.
I agree we definitely needed more play action. I would say if you’re not a natural Oline coach it takes longer to develop a run game and understand the nuances of it. Just from reading books and perspectives of other offensive coaches and my own experience. Understanding coverage is easier but learning the run game comes later in a coaches experience if you don’t have a guy mentoring you.Really understanding fronts leverage and how all blockers influence, vs the 5 routes. Coens dad came from the wing T so he already had lots of exposure to the variations of what a triple option offense can do to a boxes eyes when he was growing up
Grizzard is a victim of bad timing in multiple ways.
Just ran into him and his agent. My guess, planning the future! Good guy. Hope he goes on to something good!

I'd simplify it further... He could orchestrate early scores so it demonstrated he could put a drive together with a week of prep.
After that the lights were too bright so he turtled... And I'd wager Bowles had something to do with it.
Bowles sees the defense as a weakness so he wants to chew clock on offense then play bend don't break on defense.
It's a recipe for failure when you have play calling that doesn't match the personnel... Square peg round hole
