From one goat to another. Guess this replaces george fant possibility?
licht wants baker here a long time. I do as well. Hope this happens.

Jordan is a Guard. I hope they aren't planning on trotting him out at LT. He wasn't that good of a Guard.
“I love Baker. I love everything he’s done for us,” Licht said in an interview with Jeff Howe of TheAthletic.com. “The goal for us is for Baker to continue to be the player that he is, and at some point, we reach an extension when the time is right and he continues to be our quarterback for a long time. That’s the goal.”
Jordan is because Opeta is injured? I thought I read that somewhere
Licht sure has a way with words. At first glance, it's a complement, but at second glance it's a message - perhaps a challenge. The Bucs are not ready to write the big check to Baker just yet. Don't get too comfortable, Baker. Show us what you can do this year and then we'll talk about the $50+ mil/year contract. You still have something to prove.“The goal for us is for Baker to continue to be the player that he is...That’s the goal.”

Baker has thrown the most TDs in the league over the past two seasons and he’s done that with two different OCs/systems and significant injuries along the way. His consistency the past two seasons is nothing short of elite. His quote has nothing to do with “show us what you can do”. Dumb.
i mean after extending Bowles prematurely, sure why not Baker too
Listen, there's a 90% chance Baker is that dude...but dont see any upside to us extending him now. let him play out this year and i agree to do it next off-season

It's amazing how many times you continue to be wrong about these topics.
Admire the persistence though.

They've already converted $13 million of salary for 2026 into a bonus. And, in turn, this bumped Mayfield's 2025 salary cap number by $2.6 million and decreased his 2026 cap number by $10.4 million.
However, each of his void years (there are 3 of them - 2027, 2028, and 2029) increased by $2.6 million.
His cap number next year isn't bad. If they want him long-term, just get it done now.

I guess you could take it that way. I took it more as a complement but also explaining the timing. And yes to say the performance matters, especially this season.
Licht is almost an under-appreciated asset here. Almost.
Look right now at the teams dealing without hold out/hold-in type distractions, some of them having less success that the Bucs last year and before. The Bucs cant win any games directly because of "culture," but it sure plays a huge part in their overall success in this nera and that begins with Licht, from his staff hires to his coaching hires to his player acquisitions.
Longtime Bucs fan must really appreciate this era and Licht's leadership.
Well the timing is that it's the beginning of training camp and the Bucs don't want anybody to get complacent. According to JBF Bowles indicated that McCollum's job isn't safe either, but we know it is. They don't want any complacency right now, especially not Mayfield.Licht sure has a way with words. But for Licht to frame it as a "goal" as opposed to a "plan" is a subtle difference. It's something to be achieved as opposed to something that's on schedule. It's one thing to convert a few million dollars of salary into bonus. It's quite another thing to hand out $250 to $300 mil mostly guaranteed. Motivation tactic or not, I take Licht at his word that he's in wait and see mode before he hands over the keys to the franchise to Baker Mayfield.
My suggestion was why not get a deal done with Baker right now? The longer you wait, the more it's going to cost. The sooner you do it the better that deal is going to look in future years. Licht and Bowles got their deals. Why don't they just lock in Baker right now so they don't have nightmares about Kenny Pickett or Zach Wilson?
But that isn't Jason Licht. He has a different mindset than most GMs. Even though we know that mindset is what makes him a great GM it's still tough to understand exactly what makes him tick. He's different, and so he's not easy to understand.

I think Licht was asked a question that he answered, so I don't think he was making a statment one way or the other. That said, I get that it will cost more later but the cap will alos be bigger. I get that less on a QB means more for others, but I don't know that team look at it as "savings" because they are spending the cap no matter what. Keep in. ind the Bucs under Licht have never lost a player they wanted to keep because of the cap.

might explain the trolling
"The team also re-signed guard Sua Opeta, who tore his ACL last year in training camp, but he still isn't quite ready to hit the field again. As a result, the Bucs have made two new signings — they brought on guard Michael Jordan and tackle Tyler McLellan."
It's true that Licht has always been able to keep his core together. But all contracts are about the cap. Skule was a cap casualty. But the main point is true that Licht has always been able to keep the players he wants to keep.My suggestion was why not get a deal done with Baker right now? But he's never had to pay the big dollars for a QB either. Winston was on a rookie deal, Brady took a discount and Mayfield is not making top dollar. When it comes time, Licht will pay Mayfield what he's worth. It's going to put pressure somewhere else. Too soon to tell what the outcome of that will be. Licht is good, but the cap is real.
