Jadeveon Clowney 'probably' would've stayed at SC if paidBy Will Brinson | NFL Writer  CBS SportsFebruary 12, 2014 4:39 pm ET http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryHu2kOGBf4&feature=player_embedded Jadeveon Clowney will be one of the top prospects in the 2014 NFL Draft. He would've been the top prospect in the 2013 NFL Draft, except he wasn't allowed to leave South Carolina until after he was three years removed from high school. And Clowney might actually have stayed in school longer had he gotten paid for being a college athlete, which is what he told Jim Rome on Showtime in an episode that will air on Wednesday night at 9 p.m. ET.Yes. Having to take care of my family, it would have made a difference if I'd have gotten paid," Clowney told Jim Rome. "If I would have had the chance to take care of my family through college I would have probably stayed in college."Unsurprisingly, Clowney also believes that college athletes should be paid and told Rome as much."I think so," Clowney said. "They are selling our jerseys with our numbers and making money off of ticket sales so I think college athletes should get paid."There's a long way to go before that becomes a "thing" and it won't ever matter to Clowney, but he certainly has a good case for wanting to receive some compensation for generating so much money for his school.

Agree. They should take a percentage of all jersey sales and distribute it amongst the players. $300-$400 a week would be fair. Or at least give them some food stamps for the cafeteria. Although the cafeterias in most cases are probably privately run.

Idk about that with the cafeterias. Maybe this isn't the case at most schools, but here at UCF athletes on scholarship get to live in the dorms for free and have free access (possibly unlimited) to the cafeterias. I agree though the whole thing needs restructuring. To me, if they are housed and fed, there isn't as much of a need to pay them a salary as there is to give a lot more help to these kids to graduate. The graduation rates for college football are ridiculously poor. And like you said they should be able to get a cut of their own jersey sales.

I graduated from college 8 years ago and I'm still paying my student loans. Part of me says "you did get paid, that $50K education is a nice compensation". Part of me also says they deserve more because the school is rolling in dough. The President of my alma mater just signed a new contract and got $1million bonus. I'll remember that the next time I get a call for a donation.

These guys are already getting a free education, free room and board, and are being treated like kings for 3 to 5 years during a part of their life when many people have to bust their humps to make ends meet and still carry years of loan payments afterwards.  These guys are also recieving free training in a field that has the potential to make them millions.  They don't need to be paid to play college ball too.

Please. Most of these kids are dumber than a pile of rocks and I'd be willing to bet that 95% of the kids wouldn't get admission into the universities they play for. They don't have to go to college to play in the NFL, but they do have to wait 4 years after HS graduation to become Draft eligible. So the school offers you a competitive stage to showcase your talents, provides you with the best trainers and coaches in the world to help prepare you, give you a top notch education (that you wouldn't otherwise have been able to attend or afford) for free, gives you free housing and free meals, and you still want cash? Not to mention that it potentially saves you a year... possibly extending your career by another year if you're worth your salt (translating into maybe a million if you stick around on a veteran contract or whatever).Where does the entitlement end?Overworked by your college football team? Quit and give up your scholarship. Of course universities are making money, there'd be zero incentive to dump millions of dollars into athletics if they didn't make them any money. The cost would outweigh the loyalty it creates. And there'd be zero incentive to bring in any of these kids with a sub 3.2 gpa when the medium for the non athlete is a HS 3.9 (at many De colleges anyway).

People who are against paying college players can never really justify it.Universities make money just from students paying tuition. That by itself is profitable. Add on the money they rake in from donations. Then add in the hundreds of millions of dollars that they get from sports. But the players get "free" things from the university. Imagine working at Office Depot and they pay you in Printers

The problem with the argument that they get an education out of it is that a very large number of them at the major football schools don't actually graduate. They are used for 4 years and then they are out on the streets or in the NFL. That isn't entirely the fault of the school, but between football meetings and practice its like working a full time job, and then they are expected to be good students when, as previously mentioned, most of them haven't exactly had a great education before they got to college. It is my belief that should be given more help and time to earn the degree. Let them be part time students while they are playing football, and then once they have used all of their eligibility they can be full time but still covered by scholarship for their service to the school. Obviously the schools wouldn't want to do this because it would cost more, but some type of rule should be put into effect.

Except you don't have to work at office depot. You chose to work there.  There are other ways to get to the NFL, there are also other leagues you can play for. But oh that's right, those leagues suck. If you have a complaint go sue the NFL for age discrimination... good luck with that.

Valid points and I respect your opinion, but these kids get a personal tutor for every single goes class AND get mandatory extensions on assignments.

Where is this money you keep talking about?  Only a few universities actually operate in the black.  Football pays for all the other sports.  Most schools LOSE money even after they get their TV share.  It's all public record.  We haven't even brought up Title freaking IX yet.Look it up...these athletic programs LOSE money after all the bills are paid.

I'm imagining myself working at Office Depot. And they're paying my rent. And I get free food. And they give me someone to help cover for the work I don't really do. And hey look I'm treated like a king. Talent is throwing itself at me. And they're paying for my education, too! And now I'm a millionaire! And I've got endorsement contracts, and I'm on TV! This Office Depot gig is freakin' sweet!

Do you not realize you proved my point? https://www.nflregionalcombines.com/Docs/Eligibility%20rules.pdf Nowhere does it say a college education is mandatory. It's incredibly difficult to get into the NFL without having playing in college, I agree. But it is not the colleges fault that they're the main pipeline into the NFL, that is the NFL's fault because it hires from there (and seemingly only there). Again if you, or a player has an issue with this system, take it up with the NFL. Sue them for creating unfair barriers of entry. But why are colleges at fault for seeing an opportunity and taking advantage of it? No one is putting a gun to these kids' head to play, the option is still there. OR, create a competitive league where all high school recruits, who have no interest in an education, can go play at a competitive level (good luck convincing parents, after the fiasco college selection has become). Tough?... again, not the schools' fault, blame the NFL, if anyone is to be blamed. But honestly, with all the uneducated idiots who play on Sundays, who would want to take a risk on someone without a college education, knowing that said kid will be interviewed twice a week and will potentially embarrass your organization?

If you think less than .05% of players is enough for your "proof" than you have some living in the real world to do.
