I know Coen is a "genius" and all that, but his unit was the problem most of the game, right?
The Panthers first half TD drive starts at the Bucs 36 yard line. We had a 22 yard punt BUT that punt comes from our 14 yard line AFTER a holding penalty and a 13 yard sack take the offense backward about 25 yards.
Bad snaps, fumbles, holding, lineman downfield, false starts on WRs, and outside run on 3rd and goal from the TWO.
dont think we can blame Coen for the bad snaps, fumbles, and holdings; but there were a few sequences i was upset with him
the one where Baker tries to play Hero, comes back in after an injury, and on 3rd and 1, decides to throw the football; Baker INT
the other was Bucky running all over the place, and personnel choice dont have him in there when we are trying to punch in a touchdown to go up 8. Likely holding out Bucky because he was hurt so i will let it slide.
also frustrating at times that we weren't throwing the ball forward....Evans catching the ball at will but it seems some drives we dont even try to push the ball down field.
in any event, Coen is the man
we are averaging nearly 28 points a game, top 6 in the league.
if anything, the defense making Young look like Peyton Manning on that last drive was a bit unsettling.
in any event, Coen is the man
Easily the lone bright spot on this coaching staff.
And, with that being said, there was plenty of criticism being lobbed his way in the game day thread.

The Chiefs have a solid defense (Chris Jones etc) and he did the same thing against the Chiefs. This is the Kansas City Star:
"Bryce Young cooked. The Chiefs allowed the NFL’s worst passing offense to move up and down the field like the 2018 Chiefs.
The Chiefs are failing to generate pressure without blitzing, and when offered time to throw, Young got into a rhythm unlike he has all year. Then he started making plays even when he did see some opposition in the backfield — killing the Chiefs’ blitzes, too."
Young threw for 262 yards and a touchdown. That’s a season-high in yardage. The Panthers, mind you, are dead last in the NFL in expected points added per pass attempt (-0.33) this season. Virtually all of their offense comes from the run.
They flipped the scheme, passing on eight of their initial 10 first downs. It worked, by the way. They eventually turned seven of those eight into a new set of downs. That’s what happens when you fail to put the quarterback in a hurry."
Again, I think Coen's great but last night the offense basically struggled through the whole game, until the 4th qtr and OT
"Entering the fourth quarter, Mayfield, playing through a significant ankle injury, was 10-of-21 for 121 yards and a touchdown to go with two bad interceptions and three sacks that were largely of his own doing."
"In the fourth quarter and overtime Mayfield was 11-of-12 for 114 yards."
Most frustrating game I've seen a Bucs play caller have maybe ever. Border line stupidity and the only reason we didn't lose was luck. I haven't seen the Bucs have this much of a clear advantage at the line of scrimmage in a game. Vertical movement every play, positive runs what seemed like every frst down and then passing for no reason. Run for 5, run for 4, INT on 3rd and 1? Empty on 2nd and 6 in FG range in overtime??!?!?!?!? Bucs should have run for 300 yards and won this game easily.
The entire team was out of sync all game long with a few exceptions here and there.

This is exactly how I feel. Coen outsmarted himself.
He was due for a dud and luckily his worst game is still decent enough to win.
Second worst game of the season next to Broncos game.
The entire team was out of sync all game long with a few exceptions here and there.
Correct. The HC didn't have his team ready to play.
Coen outsmarted himself.
Thats a good way to put it.
I would only add that winning games you should win, when you must win, is tough. All the more so IN THE DIVISION and away.
And, as much as we all say "its the Panthers," we all said that about Commanders game 1. Clearly they are a better team now.
The Bucs defense is bubble gum and paper clips and yet they arguably outperformed the Chiefs defense against the same team a week earlier. It does not feel that way because the expectation is based on "its the Panthers," but if you look at the game the Bucs defense actually holds thing in place while the offense is shitting the bed for most of 3 quarters. Same style of defense as last season, bend (a lot) but don't break . . hopefully . . please dont break . . lord jesus . . heaven above . . dont break.
definitely not the best coen's game, but some options were not there. otton was awful and shepard is simply too stupid to be trusted. still, pulling out bucky after that 43yds run was OK for one play .... but not indefinitely
whatever, we were lucky, refs helped a bit ... who cares. normally it is other way around!
this is fun, no matter what, wehad too many dark years with freeman/glennon/jameis under center and all those hopeless coaches since our great SB team fell apart. we deserved to be competitive and hell we are!!!!!
otton was awful and shepard is simply too stupid to be trusted.
Huge opportunity that no one seems to be taking. Hopefully someone steps up.
@badabingbucs Yes, it is troubling that the Bucs pass defense continues to make every QB look All-Pro. I thought after the Giants game that they had learned that the pass coverage is not strong enough to stop anybody unless you apply maximum pressure through multiple blitzes. It worked beautifully against the Giants and I suspect it would have worked against Young. But they went back to what has consistently failed. And it will fail again if they don't learn from what hasn't worked.
Yeah Otton got his yips back...
Sheppard... I don't know what we are expecting with him but going to him twice on the goal line was wild.
But let's get real for a second. Coen's worst day is better than Bowles best day this year.
While I was very frustrated with Coen, especially inside the 5 yard line... He's still the clear future of this organization.
I would love Coen to be head coach then Eberflus or Salah become DC.
But let's get real for a second. Coen's worst day is better than Bowles best day this year.
100%
But let's get real for a second. Coen's worst day is better than Bowles best day this year
Agreed, but that is kind of the point I am making.
Most of the post-game judgments dont really reflect what happened on the field in the actual game. Instead, they mostly reflect the "Bowles sucks/Coen's awesome" view of the Bucs overall
Last night the terrible Bowles defense was still pretty terrible BUT it did actually perform better than it has in a while. 23 points versus 30 and versus 27 the Chiefs gave up the week before.
By comparison, the incredibly awesome offense of Coen sucked ass for most of the game. And that actually had a direct impact on the defense. In the second quarter the offense went backwards about 20 yards and then punted giving the ball to the Panthers on the Bucs 36. That was the Panther's lone TD until late.
Just before half, Mayfield throws a TERRIBLE INT and the Panthers get the ball on their own 43 . . the defense holds them to a FG
Mayfield throws an even worst INT later and the Panthers get the ball at the Bucs 20 . . . the defense holds them to a FG
The Bucs offense only had 10 points going into the 4th quarter. This is the offense that hung 50 on the Saints
Saying Coen's offense struggled most of LAST NIGHT is NOT saying Bowles should get an extension lmao. Its just accurately stating reality.
