We were facing the leagues worst run defense and he almost refused to run the damn ball. He was determined to have Baker force throws when the run game was clicking.

Let's not pretend Theilen didn't score an earlier TD.

We just got a super lucky call. Defense didn't really "stop" them

Well, but then the official stats dont mean anything because breaks go both ways but ultimately the score is what matters right? In other words, the arguments will just increase to "yeah but they missed two field goals . . ."

again, not saying the defense is great just saying that compared to the offense they contributed above their ability for much of the game and thats with extreme backups in a couple positions

That game is close because the offense sucked and the defense, as poor as it is, held us in it. Its been the OPPOSITE of that mostly

I'm simply referring to the eyeball test. Panthers took it up and down the field pretty easily but our RedZone defense finally improved.

2 missed fgs and the 4 point swing on the Theilen TD is 10 points and right above our season average.

Rewatched the first half and I can't believe the play calling. The line was getting vertical displacement every run except 1 and he kept throwing on 2nd and medium, leading to punts.

The bad play calling and Barton stalling drives was a bad first half by the Bucs.  Evans bailed them out of that poor first half showing.

Had the Bucs pounded the rock aggressively in the first half and the defense went m2m more often that game should have not been that close.

https://www.nfl.com/news/2024-nfl-season-week-13-what-we-learned-from-sunday-s-games

Next Gen Stats Insight for Buccaneers-Panthers (via NFL Pro): Bryce Young was at his best passing against the Buccaneers’ zone coverage in Week 13, completing 23 of 32 attempts for a season-high 242 yards (+5.3% CPOE). Against man coverage, Young completed just 3 of 14 attempts for 56 yards (-9.8% CPOE). Young was also productive on passes under 10 air yards, completing 21 of 25 attempts for a season-high 185 yards (7.4 yards per attempt).

I was just going to pst that same bit.  Right on your point

Last season Bowles defended the zone by implying they did not have the talent for more man, but he then also went more man (I think) in the late run and playofs)

Pretty sure it was Baker forcing the ball when he shouldn't have. The penalties on offense killed most drives as well.

Wasn't his best game as a play-caller, its funny because the commentators mentioned how his father wanted Liam to run the ball more. Coen calls the game like a great modern OC should, but he could've made his job easier had he exploited CAR weaknesses more.

yeah that was great and it was the right advice

Coen is doing a great job, but the league is entirely about adapting because defenses will figure things out. Interested to see how he also adapts, especially with his hands tied somewhat by the loss of Godwin

I was upset all game long that the Bucs didn't run the ball more, especially on the 3rd and 1 when Baker threw a pick. It was dumbfounding given that Carolina had given up the most rushing yards/game through week 12. Run the ball when you should! Note the Bucs late running success.

Playing heavy zone makes sense against players like Lamar Jackson but Bryce Young? 90% of NFL QBs can carve up the zone because you're throwing into a space so it's stationary.

If you wanna play zone you need Fred Warner type LBs that excel at moving laterally and reading the QB. You need long length CBs that can communicate. You need to have a very good pass rush with tall DTs that knock down passes.

We are lacking most of these things. We'd be better off playing m2m with 2 high safety, press at the line, and disguise the 2 high with "blitzes" by bringing them to the line then abandoning deep to coverage over and over like the Vikings do. Then you can get their QB playing the guessing game.

You can't sit back and in soft zone and send 0 blitz and expect a QB to not find an immediate hitch route.

Bowles is toast. He doesn't understand the NFL

After watching the game I thought the Bucs could have run for 300 yards if they ran on 2nd and medium, 3rd and short. Looking at the game film that number is really 400. This was the biggest line of scrimmage mismatch I've ever seen in a Bucs game. And the fact that needed luck to win this game is a big indictment on Coen.

Coen didn't pitch a great game but he's still our ace.

And he went back to the run when it mattered most. He orchestrated a 30 second drive to get into FG range.

His worst game is still better than most but I agree... He left a lot of meat on the bone (this is how you'd use that analogy) 😉

He went back to the run when it mattered most? Did you watch the game? In overtime we had 2nd and 6 at the Carolina 36 and HE WENT EMPTY AND MAYFIELD GOT SACKED.
