Just thinking about our options, I'm not as optimistic as some of you guys.In free agency our only real option would be Rolando McClain... Pass!So our only real option is to start a rookie from day one. Doesn't sound very wise considering he would also be wearing the green dot.Also, by the time we pick at 34, Kendricks and Perryman could be gone.PJ Dawson is an option, though he disappointed at the combine for what it's worth.McKinney is now being viewed as an OLB.Even if we DID get one of those guys, I still don't think starting them from day one would be good.This leads me to two propositions, which you can feel free to bash me for..1. Could the Foster replacement thing be just a ploy to get him to come down on his asking price?I really don't get the hate for the guy. He hasn't been Luke Kuechly, but he hasn't been bad at all. He has made a lot of splash plays and he does great in the run game beside David. Granted he isn't spectacular in coverage, but I gotta believe he would fare much better this season than a rookie coming in with ?s. With Kendricks you have to question his size. Yeah he's fast but I'm not sure he'll do well shedding blocks or taking on guys like Gronk, Graham, Beastmode etc.With Perryman you see his game being very similar to Foster's. He can be physically imposing, impressive in the run game, but may lack the ability to cover (which is further evidenced by his underwhelming height and 40 time). Just how much better would he be than Foster?2- This may be a bit of a stretch. But, as good as Lavonte is, could he slide inside and be Lovie's Mike? I don't see why not. He has the instincts, speed, physicality, and aggressiveness needed to play the position and perform at a high level. Plus, he's already gotten experience calling the defensive plays for Schiano.It would be much easier to land a solid WLB than it would be to find a better MLB than Mason Foster.
