I think it was pretty evident that Trask won the preseason competition and was the better camp QB, for the most part. Mayfield won because he was given the job at his signing. The competition was strictly a case of if Baker just absolutely sucked, and Trask looked like Brady 2.0 that they could actually give the job to Trask.
the conspiracy
Mayfield was a NOTHING. If Trask clearly outplays him -- that is the standard for any rookie trying to win a spot -- he is the starting QB
But that reality ends your argument, so it becomes a conspiracy. Its Bowles (who need to win to save his job) who is WRONGLY holding back you guy.

What is it with weirdos like you? There's no conspiracy. It was simple fact that Baker was basically promised to start unless he shit the bed. Todd was all in on Baker, and Trask wasn't going to start unless the gulf between the two was enormous, which it wasn't. Even Ira Kaufman basically said this. Yet, you seem to think it's a conspiracy. The only conspiracy is the one you have running around in your head.
Come on JC, throw that hatred in your heart away and use some objectivity
Bucs first offensive drive - 1st play is the patented run for a successful 5 yards, second play is a short pass for 4 yards setting up a 3rd and 1. Bucs blatantly showing run play that even your senile next door 85 year old neighbor sees coming and White is stuffed for -1 yards. Bucs forced to punt. Is this Canales? The offensive line? White? Baker?
The 3rd and 1 was Baker. He checked into that call and he did it very late. That's an example of Baker not being a good QB because crap like that happens all the time. Baker is the king of checking into an inefficient run. But you only see it as the line's fault because you lack depth.

I caught it about a half dozen times, but there certainly could have been more instances.

one of his biggest flaws. There’s a library full of bad plays that began with late checks
The whole Turbo snap cadence needs to be trashed. If the clock is winding down and Baker checks into a different play too late, if the clock hits 1 and you don't like the look the defense is giving, call a time out to make sure you get the proper play in. Makes me wonder if Bowles has a mandate for players not to call timeouts ? I mean we took all 3 into halftime ( as per usual ) so whats the harm in calling time out there, rather than rushing the play?
Did not watch All-22 but obvious things that need addressing in the off-season.
LG - Stinnie has done an admirable job filling in but he is a liability in pass protection and a big one.
TE - Otton is a nice #2 TE but far from a starting TE in the NFL. Below average blocker, does not create much separation, and isn't much a threat after the catch. His blocking is a huge problem and has been holding the run game back. So many run plays were blown up because he is strong enough to seal at the POA.
QB - Mayfield is who is, I didn't expect much from day 1 but there are other pressing needs.

I have had the same questions. You can see it happening so why not call the TO? Maybe you're right
The film breakdown... how much did Baker leave on the table the first 3 quarters until we broke out in the 4th when it was too late.
Eye test, this was 50/50 Canales awful play calling and Baker missing the few opportunities he created.
We all know what Baker missed... so what's the verdict on Canales this game?
I saw no identity... I saw running just to say you ran the ball... I didn't see any screen to counter their pressure. I didn't see Godwin or Evans involved. I didn't see much PA. I didn't see the pass to set up the run.
Were there opportunities within a low margin of error? Yes, absolutely... but when Canales isn't calling to well, he essentially calls an offense that requires pinpoint accuracy ala Brees/Brady.
Nothing is simple and nothing is quick when the offense sputters... it's 7 steps and slow.
Let's see if the tape says something else... I've been wrong before. But this game felt like Canales put a ton of pressure on Baker to thread the needle.
Dave Canales must have gotten a call from Vegas on this game, there was no need to wait for the 4th quarter to open up.
Everyone at home was yelling it and it’s the Bucs true identity as long as long as they have Evans, Godwin & Co. Can they run it?, yes, but off the passing game which should include screens to the RB’s, both of them move well in the open field. In addition, why not roll the Baker-Man and move his pocket to create more space? He’s not tall & was dropping straight back from what looked like a riot crowd barreling down on him. That's what the film will tell.
Cade Otton is trash 98% of the time. We need a TE #1 and let Otton be a 2 or 3. He can't block and he doesn't get open enough to be a receiving only TE.
Is Otton any better than the kid we had that's now on the Bengals? Seems like the exact same player.
How Otton gets so many looks is puzzling to me

Agree
The TE plays a critical role in the offense and I'd love to see Otton succeed, but he struggles to get great separation and he misses a lot of key blocks
The All-22 on this one is...well...woof.
Reminds me a bit of the Lions game.
