but right now we are stuck with pro bowl alternate mayfield
LOL.
Even the Trask supporting/Mayfield-crushing crew here would acknowledge (I think) that Mayfield is GREATLY outplaying everyone's PRE-season expectations?
I hope
The only thing he's done better than expected is keep the turnovers down. That's it. He's still giving us the mostly mediocre to barely average play. He gets named an alternate for two reasons: 1) really crappy down year for QB's in general, and 2) because he's the guy that is playing so much better than last year when he was just beyond horrendous most of the time. So everyone thinks he's doing great, especially if they only look at the stats. But look into how and when those stats were built up and the house of cards comes crumbling down.
Life's great with alternate pro-bowler Mayfield
Hey man, those 3rd alternates don't grown on trees!
Lol.
Well Baker played like shit but again Canales did him no favors.
And Bowles did Canales no favors by deferring and then playing prevent and allowing an 8 minute drive to start the game and deflate us.
Offense had to sit for 8 minutes then we come out and go 3 and out because of vanilla play calling and seemingly Baker rushing into a checked run while Bowles failed to use a TO.
The rest of the game was filled with long drives for Saints, and 3rd and longs for us.
We are not a run first team and we certainly shouldn't be run first vs a stout saints defense.
Nothing came easy and while I'm certain the tape will show players open and Baker missing those opportunities... I'm also certain that wasting downs and time running the ball into a wall and presenting as many third and longs as possible took Baker and the entire offense out of rhythm.
Canales needs to adapt and learn.
Examples I already used were never applied: roll out, screens, short passes that act like run plays, and more targets for Evans and Godwin.
At one point Edmonds had 7 touches to Godwin's zero
but right now we are stuck with pro bowl alternate mayfield

One of the funniest posts about a pro bowl QB ever.
At one point Edmonds had 7 touches to Godwin's zero
I am a huge Canales fan, but on this point we saw one of Canales' true struggles on the day. They were trying to go to Godwin (the first play of the 2nd series is his staple play), but the Saints knew it and we did not adapt . .. thats on Canales for sure.
Watching the all 22 on the second play of the first drive where he hit's Otten for a gain of 4, had Baker not held the ball so long and threw with anticipation he had Godwin come open on an out route with 3 yards of separation that would have given us a first down @ the 45 yardline. Missed opportunity.
Third down and 1 rather than calling Turbo and rushing the snap ( alerting the defense of the hurried snap) Baker should have called a time out so that Canales could get them in a better play call
first play of the second drive throws to Otten, I believe this is the correct read but Otten just dropped it
Second drive overall was straight ass all around from playcalling and execution, outside of the big gain to Evans. Had Evans just kept running rather than cutting inside he likely gains an extra 5-7 yards
3rd and 15 throw to David Moore, Moore needs to make that catch even if it's a yard short its still in FG range.
Third drive 2nd & 7 Otten goes in motion to the top of the screen, Baker Scrambles left, fails to reset his base and underthrows Palmer for the pick. What Baker missed was just as he was about to make the throw the corner covering Otten fell down leaving him wide open on the play that likely sees him make it at least to the 15 yard line.
fourth drive first and 10 from the 19. Baker throws a screen to Edmunds for minimal gain, what he missed was before deciding on the screen, Godwin worked himself into a soft spot in the zone between 5 defenders with NO one within 10 yards of him at the 37 yard line. Godwin had ample opportunity for YAC with the amount of space between he and the defenders.
There's plenty of blame to go around, Canales called a poor game up to this point, players on both sides of the ball were not executing, and Baker missed multiple opportunities to put the offense in better position
Perspective
"Tampa Bay Buccaneers Baker Mayfield needs 93 yards to reach the 4,000-yard passing mark this weekend. He can also reach 30 TD passes with 2 TDs."
Mayfield is currently 28TD to 10 INT for just under 4,000 yards . . . on 534 attempts
Thats a career year for him and in line with his predecessor (albeit with about 200 less attempt)
Trade all that BS though for a Panther win, with him or Trask at the helm
Highest ratio of run run pass. Guess who's first by a nautical mile?

absolutely brutal lol
and it’s not like baker has a great completion percentage for Canales to continuously want to operate on third downs
Exactly. Hey Baker you're an average QB and you're short... let's keep putting you in obvious passing downs!
How does 3rd and 8 sound?
No
Ok best we can do is 3rd and 6

Don't the Bucs actually have a good 3rd down conversion rate (its in the bar graph), especially for a substandard team? Obviously terrible against the Saints, but when they are winning they are converting at a high rate because they are keeping it in 3rd and manageable.
I dont know that that is the best way to win in the current version of the NFL, but that is what Canales is trying to accomplish. It is what he learned from Pete Carroll, literally.
We are not a run first team
Much to the chagrin of the loon, this is true. All of the numbers, i.e. facts, back this up.

Yikes! It appears your posts calling out the shortcomings of our OC have had merit all along. I thought you were just bloviating. A hat tip, my dear sir.
Canales on the Saints loss:
“Yeah, I think I could feel that, for sure,” Canales said. “Even in those types of games, what do we rely on? Our basics – the assignments, the execution – those are things that were kind of uncharacteristic for the way we’ve been playing football for the last couple of weeks.
“[It was] really a timely wake-up call for our guys. We can’t just show up and expect these things to happen for us. It takes a lot of intentionality. Even with all the holiday season and all of that – whatever that is – we have to maintain our focus.”
The part in bold is why NFL teams almost never repeat championships. And a real credit to Brady if you thin about how close we were in 2021, as compared to 2003 . . a team with multiple HOFers.
Success or perhaps better described as accolades tend to stop many athletes from doing the small things, in part based on the belief that the success just happens, someone else will come through.
