Probably doesn’t take many wins for Bowles to get to his next year.

After carefully reviewing the schedule, the Bucs will win 6-7 games this season. Only ownership and the FO will know if that's enough for Bowles to keep his HC job. Sadly, the season record will place the Bucs in draft purgatory, and they won't get their franchise QB unless they trade up. And they have to hope those picking before already have a QB and want to load up on picks. Frankly I thought it was a huge mistake to promote Bowles to HC. He's a damn decent DC, and that's where he should be. But if not Bowles, who was their other choice? Lefty? LOL! And if they brought in an outsider in as HC, does Bowles stay as DC? Rock and a hard place scenario. But most believe Bowles is not really HC material. This will be a lost season for the Bucs. We'll still pull for them, but most weeks it will be hard to watch IMHO.

6?

he’s on a 5 year deal, the team probably writes off last year as not on him, in rebuild mode.

maybe less than 6 IF losses are down to QB play

The whole thing is not worth the gamble, so he's going to hit the market at the end of the season regardless of how he plays this year IMO. He's playing for a contract, but it won't be with the Bucs.

this should mean we get his best play

Yes I think we will.  I guess the best scenario is that the Bucs go deep into the playoffs with White being a large part of it.  In that case it will be tough for the Bucs not to pay him.  The price will be even higher though.  That's why I said months ago, before White was putting up a stink, that the Bucs need to fish or cut bait with him.  Sign him or trade him.  The price will only go up next year.  But the Bucs didn't do that.  So now if he plays well they'll be in the position of having to let go of a key player or pay him a lot more.  If he doesn't play well, then the decision is easy.  They'll just let him walk.  Red Boarders can say what they want about White, but if he plays well this year the Bucs will be in a conundrum.

If I were GM and White plays well this year, I would ABSOLUTELY franchise him with the intent to trade him for a pick higher than the end of the 3rd round.

I don't care how happy he is... this is a business.

So he can ball out for all I care... 1 year won't convince me to pay him long term but I want the trade value for future consideration.

I am not offering this as a  defense of Licht, just as a different perspective.

If you accept the premise that Arians is the driving force behind the White pick then Licht has managed to navigate White successfully.  He didn't bite on the big 2nd contract and is set to get a "prove it" year out of White.

First, you have to hope you aren't having to use the tag on Winfield.  Second, like I said its a big risk for a small reward.  The reward is that you get a better pick in trade than you would get as a comp pick.  So maybe you get a 2nd round instead of the end of 3rd comp pick.  The risk is that you can't find a trading partner and you have to pay an unhappy White over $20 mil.  The LB tag is $20 mil in 2023.  It will surely be higher in 2024.

If White balls out and plays to his potential (which likely still won't happen despite the contract year) then our defense becomes nasty elite and we likely have double digit wins.

If you franchise him for 1 year at $22m who cares? Then we have a bad cap situation for 1 season.

I get the argument about risk reward for sure... but playing it safe is what loser franchises do.

Would you trade to arizona D White for Isaiah Simmons and 3rd rnd pk 2024?

the team should have harvested a couple of players for draft choices - the writing is on the wall, this team is destined to mediocrity or worse in the coming season. Would have been good to be in the running for Caleb Williams - still might be. Give Mike Evans a chance to win another SB with a top tier team by trading him for picks along w/ White. Start over. Trask Mayfield and Canales are going to be a clown act.

With your plan, what year would the Bucs be competitive?

In that context that is perfectly fine.

As Bucs fans we expect homegrown talent to receive second contracts but sometimes you can't overpay and you have to pay the core that offer the best roster flexibility.  Which is why I don't see how White has a future as a Buc if he doesn't expand his skill set beyond being a Nate Webster clone.

PR has reported that the front office had significant concerns about Doug Martin when they gave him a big deal but they did it anyway in support of Koetter

point: a decent GM is working to give his coach the best chance of succeeding and sometimes that means questionable picks (from the team perspective)

this is one reason that bad teams who changes coaches often really struggle. Constantly forced to reshape rosters

It's rebuilding time. It doesn't appear that Trask has the confidence of the team. Mayfield? Who knows. Everyone seems to feel that Mayfield-Canales will produce similar results as Seattle had with Geno Smith. Why exactly?   This team wasn't any good until Brady showed up. It needs a top-tier QB. Caleb Williams time. So 4-5 seasons.
