Apologies if this has been recently discussed, I've been busy lately so I may have missed a thread about it. I'm wondering the board's thoughts on the following:We can all agree the team was generally on the lower end talent wise prior to Lovie's arrival here. He has been tasked with turning this team around essentially from scratch. He has had two drafts in which to do so, and in those drafts we have picked all offense aside from Kwon Alexander. Considering this dedication to improving the offense first, are we judging Lovie too harshly for the shortcomings on his defense?I would argue Smith and staff made some poor decisions when releasing some incumbent players upon their arrival. Revis, Zuttah, maybe Penn, etc. These moves could be justified for salary reasons, but really kicked us in the teeth when our free agent replacements bombed. 2014 was a bad, bad year roster wise.Despite the lack of talent and new, quality picks on the defensive side of the ball I believe we're seeing the issue compounded by Smith's poor clock management and discipline of his players. We are not a well oiled, veteran unit on D, and every little mistake is compounded and exposes our players' flaws whether it's inexperience or just plain lack of talent. It's on Smith to minimize the situations and plan ahead to put us in a position to play steadier, calmer and more focused ball. In marked contrast to Smith, we have Dirk Koetter who, in my belief, is doing a very good job keeping his unit collected. For heaven's sake we were essentially down to one WR today, we have a salmonella-raw offensive line, yet the O was able to produce and make the most out of its limited hand.I'm sure there's tons of other bad things to point out about Lovie. But if I ask myself my OP question here I think, yes, we still have to give him time to get some better personnel on the D.
