I think Mayfield was pretty banged up last year because he completely fell off a cliff last year. He was pretty solid early in the season looking like an MVP candidate. He also didn't have a great defense that was not consistent. Good when he was bad and bad when he was good. Need everyone to be better next year if they want to get back to the playoffs.

i think we had a blocked punt against Houston. Mayfield overcame it. We had a blocked kick against the Eagles, Mayfield could not overcome it.
Mayfield's play definitely dropped off, maybe injury, but his play was only one part of the Bucs struggles.
I like Baker and his moxie.
However, far too often, he makes plays with his legs. Plays that put him at a higher risk of injury. Last season, we saw what an injured Mayfield looks like. In short, not good.
I see him as better than Dilfer, but not by that much.
I also don't know why you would extend a player when the coaching staff is likely to be on its last season.
If you put a semi-competent defense and special teams and, most importantly a run game with Mayfield he's fine.
Agreed. In fact he’s more than just fine. People on here acting like Mayfield can’t be a top 10 QB in the league.
no, we know he can be a top 10 QB. In fact, thats what he was entering the 2025 season. But....was he a top 10 QB at the end of last year. With no hesitation, he was not. So he regressed. For whatever reason, worse OC, injuries to the team, injuries to him, etc. He regressed. We need to see if he can get back to 2024 levels and i am not so sure he can, let's see him do it in a make or break contract year
as for 2023 being bad. No, it wasn't bad...but it wasn't great either. It was hope as we havent seen QB play that good outside Brady in quite some time....but just because the bar is low doesn't mean you overpay the guy.
the right thing to do is to see how 2026 goes....i think it's very likely Baker is our QB for the next few years...but it's not like he will jump ship. His loyalty is to the franchise that gave him a chance when every other franchise said no thanks
i am sure Baker was not happy with his play last year
The Owner was asked if Baker was their guy
"Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. I mean, he’s gone above and beyond anything we could have asked or hoped of Baker. Everybody loves him. He performs on the field, gives 250 percent when he’s on that field. And that’s all you can ask."
There is that EXPECTATIONS part. . . again.
Biggs will be along momentarily to say that is "owner speak" because the Bucs actually thought they had a SB team with Trask at the helm.
and as to a BIG $ contract, Glazer said no problem
“That doesn’t hurt at all to write that check,” Glazer said. “It’s something that all the teams do if you have a good quarterback.”
He deferred to Licht on the timing.
I don’t know how they can look at what just happened with Cousins, Tua and Kyler and decide to give out a $200M prematurely

we are talking about the same franchise who prematurely extended Todd Bowles in 2025 when they should have waited until this offseason
im not so sure Bowles is head coach if not for that ill investment made
poorly run franchises going to make poor moves but to be fair even well run franchises like Philadelphia prematurely extend QBs. (Ie Carson wentz, Jalen hurts)
we are not at risk of losing baker particularly with franchise tag option so we really need to see what QB we have
2023 and 2025 are more average like play. You can win with this but you need a dominate defense and run game - ie Seattle last year
since our defense isn’t that (and even with JAG moves this offseason) we need baker to be closer to 2024 to warrant such a contract

Will you guys shut the fuck about Bowles already?

The Eagles have more than $400 million in void year contracts
average like play. You can win with this but you need a dominate defense and run game - ie Seattle last year
the Bowles Bucs 2023 defense was comparable (3 ppg?) to the 2025 Seattle defense
The Bucs 2024 running game was better than the Seattle 2025 run game, by almost 25 yards per game.
2025 Sam Darnold was 4000 yards on 67% completion rate and 25TDs to 14 interceptions. Thats basically 2023 Mayfield
POINT:
The Bucs and Mayfield are right there, in part because the margins we are discussing are tiny and the actual challenge - greatly impacted by health - is putting all those things together in ONE season and playing hot at the end.
For example, Mayfield's stats in the year you said was average (2023) are roughly Darnold's stats in a Super Bowl winning season, so for example the Bucs could arguably play defense inferior to the 2025 Seattle defense and make up the difference in offense (the 2024 Mayfield year)

it's relevant because you asked...how would a franchise prematurely extend a QB when you see X, Y, and Z examples
well my friend, look in the mirror of the jersey you are wearing because your favorite team is managed incompetently.

are you suggesting to me that the Philadelphia Eagles are not one of the best run franchises in the league? In the last 9 years, they have made the playoffs in 8 of those seasons. They have also won 2 Superbowls.
i hate the Eagles but can't argue that they have one of the best GMs in the league

Darnold is a game manager. He arguably was NOT better than Mayfield last year and that was his worst season with Tampa.
The Bucs Defense isn't even close to Seattles
the Bucs coaching staff isn't even close to Seattles
Bucs have talent on offense and that's the only chance we have to be relevant but there's a ceiling with us...which is 1 playoff win maybe two...and a loss in the playoffs because of our Defense. The offense was a big reason we blew chunks second half of last year but don't get it twisted, they are the only hope we have of being relevant and making playoffs next year. That being said, the defense will be just as pedestrian next year and alas, wont be able to stop power house offenses; thinking Rams, 49ers, Eagles, Lions (bounce back) next year.
Will you guys shut the fuck about Bowles already?
No.
I will praise or criticize his based on his performance.
Currently, he is a middling coach who happens to be a poor defensive coordinator who had a couple of offensive coordinators bail him out in a weak-ass division.
Nothing to praise.
Nothing to get excited about. (Well, except his eventual firing).
