1987. After a 2-14 season, the Bucs are beginning a new era under the leadership of Ray Perkins, and make the decision they want a new QB with their #1 pick in the draft, and chose prolific, textbook passer Vinny Testaverde from U of M. Incumbent Steve Young, a storied and very athletic running QB in college a couple years earlier, is already considered an NFL bust despite his youth, so to avoid any QB controversy, he is sent to the 49ers for a 2nd and 4th round pick by Coach Perkins. With 3 Super Bowl rings as a 49er, Young has proven to be one of the biggest mistakes the Bucs ever made...Testaverde went on to some success and a lot of disappointment during a very long NFL career, but never sniffed a Super Bowl... Next week, the Bucs will be at the same crossroads once again. Fresh off the identical 2-14 record they had 28 years earlier, they face the same QB dilemma; the classic dropback QB who translates quickly to the NFL, or the athletic running QB who is less gifted as a natural passer. Or the quiet kid (Testaverde) vs the much more vocal leader (Young). Whoever the choice, let's all hope Lovie Smith can get it right and help us oldtimers forget that horrible mistake from 1987...
