I don't put much stock into what De Smith has to say.  He is on his way out of the NFLPA, the most unpopular executive director of that fine institution ever. Its been going downhill since Gene Upshaw. They have an election next March IIRC, and 3 people have already expressed interest in the job.  Including Mr Derrick Brooks, and Sean Gilbert, and the 3rd candidate is keeping it on the down low.

I hope Brooks is successful in his bid for it. I heard him talking about it on NFLRadio and he seemed genuinely interested, even though he was trying to remain humble about it. It would be another great step for him to gain experience on his way to becoming an NFL GM someday.

Not sure how leading the NFLPA prepares someone to be a GM.  That's another road altogether being the head of a powerful sports labor union.  If he takes that job he won't ever be an NFL GM.  I promise you that.

Two different skill sets.

There wouldn't be nearly as big a circus if he handled his NFL "Coming out" the same way he handled it in college.

Well it was smart because now he won't be drafted by a team that doesn't accept who he is. Had he waited until after the draft he might have been drafted by a team that wouldn't accept it. It's a much smarter strategy to let it be known now rather than later. Plus is opens the doors for other people. Hopefully this gives Aaron Rodgers the courage to finally say what he contemplated saying last year.

Also, scouts and agents knew about it and Sam wanted to announce it himself.

If scouts and agents knew then what was said about the wrong team drafting him really isn't relevant. Just don't think it's necessary to announce it like this. I just don't think his sexuality should be relevant

No, it shouldn't. But sadly, it is. Welcome to America.

That may have been the original plan. But he may have been forced into going public with it now, rather then later.
