In the weeks leading up to this year’s draft, all the people who had their doubts about Jameis Winston pointed to his maturity issues at Florida State. Aside from the sexual assault allegation, which is a very serious situation, it didn’t matter how many times Winston said that his questionable behavior was a thing of the past, people had their qualms.“It’s about your actions,” Winston said, after finding out that he was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ No. 1 pick. “Whatever is in the past is in the past. I look forward to gaining everyone’s trust.” Since then, it has been so far, so good for Jameis. But, Derrick Brooks warns everyone that Winston’s evolution in the NFL will have its peaks and valleys.While speaking with Steve Duemig for the first episode of Tampa 2, Brooks shed some light on the highs and lows that Winston should expect as he goes from a rookie in the league to a veteran.Transcript via JoeBucsFan.com:“Just realize, [Jameis] was being like all of us,” Brooks said. “He was being like all of us. He’s going to go through, and I’m going to use the word ‘scarring,’ of what it’s like to be a rookie, be the No. 1 pick, play quarterback, play on an NFL team, and one day maybe evolve into a leader. But it’s a whole process to go through all that.”Brooks is a great person for a young player to have in their corner. While he will be someone who can offer solid advice, he’s also not going to sugarcoat anything.
