OK...I'm waving the white flag. At least temporarily. Going to put aside the huge character issues and really do my best to look at both players as objectively as possible. First Winston. There is no question he has a special arm. In this tape he makes some jaw dropping throws...but the corner route is a thing of pure beauty. There are not many NFL QBs who can make this throw. Winston also does display superior anticipation on routes, throwing the ball before a receiver makes his breaks. I'd be lying if I did not say I was impressed: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uHFW4d3EsPg OK, so as a die hard anti-Winston poster... I am man enough to admit that if Winston's character issues were non-existent, I think I would be happy with either guy. Winston is going to have to play within himself and not try to force throws that aren't there. Good coaching should help with that....but he also needs to play his game. His game involves more interceptions. That's just his gunslinger mentality. I prefer efficiency...but Favre and others have shown you can be successful taking chances. Need a good team around you. But in fairness, I would ask Winston supporters to look at this tape and at least admit that the notion that Marcus Mariota cannot make tight NFL quality throws is false. He throws beautiful passes on this tape. But he is just not asked to make the anticipatory throws that Winston makes. But the arm is there, and I think he can adjust to making those sorts of throws in an NFL offense. But where Mariota may lag in terms of strength and anticipation, he makes up for it with his incredible mobility and speed. He is going to extend plays and drives with this special skill set. It is becoming a more and more valuable skill set in the NFL. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9MjBN_1_j0w Maybe it's a personal preference. Do you want the Rothlesberger type or do you want the new age QB who brings different qualities, and makes less mistakes. I prefer the latter. I think it is becoming more and more valuable. Again, that is character aside. But we cannot deny character is a big deal here. OK. That was my best attempt at putting aside the cheerleading and being reasonable. Whew. Not easy. But I tried.
