You know the Bucs were really good back then, right? And the Bucs went on a mini-spending spree in 2004 under Gruden/Allen.
that's my point though, McKay kept the nucleus of Wyche and Dungy's teams together by pushing out contracts (IIRC), and added Simeon in Dungy's last year, and the salary cap hits for those contracts had to hit eventually,

Agree completely. Would personally be very interested to know how much a role he played in the hiring of Rah and Schiano and how much was the owners. Not that it makes any difference now, but would definitely feel bad for the guy if he was expected to succeed without being able to pick his own coach.

Its the GM acquiring the pieces, the coaches have to put them in position to win. I think Dom did a decent job of finding some pieces to make a playoff contending team, but the coaching was poor. He swung and missed on several contract extensions, but also found some gems to add to the team from practice squads.
