Sign Baker.If that worst-case scenario happens - signing a care-taker QB/drafting a shiny new QB - it is a return to mediocrity.
Cool. So what would you do?
As I said, worst case: blow it up.
I was clearly referencing your “worst case scenario”, which to you was no Baker.
So, again, what would you do?
Already answered that.
Bucs already have a developmental QB, if you’re going to lose, see what you have.
But if the Bucs end up drafting a QB this year, does that mean they already have an answer to the question?
As I said, that means you lose Mike Evans, too. Mike doesn’t have the time left in his career to play catch with a washed up vet or a developmental QB - he’s headed home to Houston with a team on the rise.
if Bucs dont sign Mayfield and Evans, then i'm afraid what are we even doing here
that would be so hard to understand what exactly happened.
would think if the goal is to try and win which has been exactly what the Bucs have been trying to do since they signed Brady, they would pivot to try and get Russell Wilson on board. Then again, without Mike Evans, we aren't exactly an enticing team for a QB looking to turn his career around. With Evans and Godwin, we have see both Brady and Mayfield do just that - choose Tampa to show they still got it.
I just dont think Evans waits around to see who is the Bucs QB situation so that's why i'd be surpised if Mayfield wasn't signed before the start of free agency. Need that domino to fall in place as the Bucs navigate the rest of the offense and i am sure Mike would like to know who the QB will be (despite those thinking mayfield is butt cheeks and Mike wouldn't care - itll def play a factor and Mike likes Baker or so it would appear)
@badabing - agree with you. Taking a chance on the only FA/QB option, and then lucking into Mayfield having the performance turned in - it created a plan moving forward. It leveraged the talent still on the team and allowed them to build a plan to support him/take pressure off of him.
Between the cap increase & moving on from some players soaking up cap space without the performance - we will be able to compete (financially) for additional talent.
And as we’ve said, where we need to add that offensive support (interior o-line, RB, TE/WR), is pretty achievable in FA/draft.
It is also interesting to see the quick transition, Bucs roster is the second youngest in the NFL.
I’m sure a little luck fell our way, but Licht, Greenie, SpyTech have done a tremendous job rebuilding this without blowing it up.
Defensive improvement is also pretty attainable in the draft - but it now looks like we may also be able to find some FA’s to contribute to that improvement.
I also think you’re right, having competent QB & defense - gives us the best chance to retain Mike Evans. I think it entirely possible Mike would have no choice but to move on from the Bucs without him.
Incredible behind the scenes stuff at OBP.
Per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Bucs are working to retain Mike Evans in a "major" way. He wants to retire as a Buccaneer.

yes - anything less would be a failure.
We should learn from our mistakes like when Gruden didn't retain Sapp and Lynch so he could sign Tim Brown and Charlie Garner...yuk.
You keep guys like Evans and David well beyond their welcome and that is years away. They should get Ronde Barber and Derrick Brooks treatment.

Agreed, as long as it's within reason.
Well, if it’s not within reason, it may reset the draft board.
Evans could return to Tampa but “wants to explore his options” per the athletic
nothing? Or something?
Maybe it’s true.
Maybe Mike tests the market. If that’s what he ends up doing, I won’t like it, but he’s earned it.
Could mean he’s gone, could mean we’ll pay market price, or not.
Interested to see if this actually happens. lots of posturing
Baker and Evans will both be back. All this arguing for nothing

I mean honestly hard to fault a guy for looking out for his best interest.
if Bucs are offering $23M, you know you have a good floor; so you go out and test the market
Bucs likely to match anything within $5m of that so it’s smart by Mike
i wouldn’t be concerned but unfortunately if he does leave it will catch us by surprise and be that more gut wrenching
I mean honestly hard to fault a guy for looking out for his best interest
last contract probably. so yes no fault to him. and still a long way to go
we will see.
His contract is presumably the one they have been working on the longest, but that also might have the widest variance

I have a hard time caring about the number he gets. I can’t imagine this team without Mike
i imagine licht feels the same way which is why it will likely be a contract that captain hindsight individuals will say “too money money” but if I ever seen a situation where the Bucs have no choice, it’s Mike Evans coming off a great year and trying to remain a competitive team
