I would suggest Mike preference is to remain in Tampa but not at a hometown discount

so if offered 20M with Tampa and 20M with the chiefs, I think he’ll be ready for a change and choose the chiefs.

Houston is a question mark. How many times have we seen a stud QB and then come back down to earth. Jury is still out on stroud. (As it is baker) but Houston is also one where I can see Mike choosing

we will have to pony up the cash to retain Evans as we should.

yeah maybe not 30m to make him highest paid but 25 we should not flinch at

There were a number of reports yesterday stating the Texans would not be pursuing Evans.

And I agree as stated above, he can sign with chiefs which make improve his brand for post NFL and that is important.

Absolutely!

It would essentially be a strategic move for his Canton resume.

  • Barring injury, it’s a lock for him to keep the 1K streak alive for another 3 seasons
  • It would be his best shot at another title (or at least another SB appearance).
  • The exposure he’d get from playing along side the NFL’s poster child

Playing for KC would essentially lock him into Canton.

That's true, but the Chiefs aren't going to be able to offer significantly more money than the Bucs would.   So that means Evans is leaving the Bucs, even if Mayfield is signed, not because of the money but because of the chance to get another ring and more national attention.   So what about all the narrative all along that Mike wants to stay in Tampa Bay if the money is right?   That's all gone now?

100%.  Chiefs aren't going to be able to offer him anymore than the Bucs; maybe significantly less.

KC may have to give Chris Jones $30 million/yr (4-yrs, $120 million) to keep him, and that is a big priority, seeing as we have just one DT on the roster, and CJ is the only legit top-tier DL we have.

Then we have to go LT hunting again (doesn't look likely right now that our LT will be returning in 2024), and those aren't cheap either.  THEN we're still hoping that no one offers Sneed what he's worth, so we can sign him to a cap-friendly deal that still is going to cost near $20 million/yr AAV.

AFTER ALL OF THAT GETS DONE, whatever $$$ is left will go to a FA WR, which looks like something around $20 million/yr max, and might be $5-7 million less than that when all is said and done in those other areas.

But wait there's more!!!!

There's a better than even chance that we'll need two FA WRs to fill the gaping lack-of-talent hole in the Chiefs' WR room, so we may end up signing two JAGs (assuming we dump either Toney/Moore/Watson), and never have enough $$$ to even offer Evans a contract.

But there's been alot of talk about the possibility of ME13 becoming a Chief.  Just not very much hope.  Some of the Chiefs podcast gurus think Darnell Mooney (CHI) might be Veach's target.  God help us, lol.

Anyway, there's not very much smoke at all about Evans in the usual Chiefs outlets so far.  A tiny bit of speculation, but that's about it.  Take that for whatever it's worth.

“Before free agency begins next week, the Buccaneers and five-time Pro-Bowl WR Mike Evans reached agreement on a two-year, $52 million that includes $35 million guaranteed, per his agent @DerykGilmore.

Evans now has a real chance to start and finish his career in Tampa as a Buc.”

“At 2/$52M I Expect the Bucs are going to be using at least 2 void years to manage the initial cap hit in 2024.”

Fair deal for both parties. Gets to gauge where this team will be in two years and keeps his options open. And for us we can see if he fell off at 32-33

This free agent experience gives some real insight to the way the negotiating parties use journalists and the way the journalists balance their obligation to report with preserving their own credibility.

Two or three days ago, Russini of the Athletic and the Times and other credible news organizations reported that Mike Evans WOULD hit free agency, most likely coming from Evans' agent. This is how Russini covered that bit of "news:"

"[W]ide receiver Mike Evans plans to hit free agency for the first time in his career. The Bucs and Evans are still in discussions, but he wants to explore his options. This doesn’t mean his time in Tampa is over, but Evans wants to hear from all interested teams. This is his first chance to be courted. I still believe he’ll stay with the team that drafted him."

Note the part in bold.

Russini  is now reporting that Mayfield will NOT take a "hometown discount," again very likely a point made by Mayfield's agent.

"What's next for Tampa? Trying to sign Baker Mayfield. The Bucs have started negotiations to keep him and making every effort to get it done. Sources have shared the QB will not take a hometown discount to stay. Meanwhile teams like Atlanta and Minnesota are watching...'

It sort of a blurb of nothingness because what does it mean to take a hometwon discount anyway? It all comes out in the wash

Per Jordan Schultz:

Just spoke with Mike Evans’ agent, @DerykGilmore, who says: “Mike wants to play with an elite quarterback in an offense that will showcase him — and be paid like a top wide receiver. He doesn’t want to play with a rookie QB. Winning a Super Bowl is a key priority.

While I’m sure it’s just agent talk, the 2 lines in bold stick out because we don’t have either.

KC would now easily be the biggest threat.

Evans thinks we are a SB contender and Mayfield is elite!
