Taking an RB top 5, especially one from the SEC is a dicey move. Auburn and Alabama have workhorse RB systems so by the time the players get to the NFL there are quite a few miles on those tires. I loved Caddy, always will, that guy had heart.
sure he did....he just wasn't that good.
Gruden must be saying What The HELL
"Had i drafted Aaron Rodgers instead of a broken down RB, i'd still be coaching. What the HELL?"
It seriously cracks me up how you always get on Gruden for that when in reality most teams passed on Rodgers and Cadillac's injuries happened later in his career after he was the rookie of the year. Teams passed on Brady 6 times. Hindsight is awesome.
I worried about gruden three times. One was when he questioned simm's injury. Two was when he said he wanted fg's.Third was when he couldn't get jg and ab on the field at the same time. With every coach there are worries, but at least with gruden, you knew we had at least a chance at pplayoffs once in awhile. I don't think there is anyone willing to say schiano could do the same.Mentally, schiano is weak in the nfl. He will get outcoached almost every time.

Cadillac's injuries began after three games.
He can think what he wants, just because the replacements weren't very good doesn't mean he wasn't fired with good reason.
We don't need Aarron Rodgers. We got his kid brother!

To me the issues of this team go back even more than that. That very first draft pick after Gruden got here could have been a game changer too, from what I remember Gruden wanted Brian Westbrook and was over ruled by McKay who took Marquise Walker. If we'd have figured out the RB position ahead of that 05 draft Caddy wouldn't have been the pick and there's a good chance Rodgers may have ended up a Bucs. But who knows how the Butterfly effect really would have worked, maybe if we drafted Westbrook we wouldn't have won the Super Bowl that year.Same goes for Rodgers, would Mr Sensitive have been the All World QB he is if he was thrown in there from day 1 on a bad team and had Gruden yelling at him rather than being allowed to sit & learn on a good team behind Favre for a few years?I get the feeling that Rodgers would have ended up a big time bust if we'd have taken him #5.

We aren't talkin about most teams, we're talkin about this team. A team that's been longing for a franchise qb since.....well, forever. A team that happened to be coached by the qb guru. A team that passed on Rodgers because we had Chris freakin Simms. If you were around at the time, you'd know this isn't about hindsight.

Its nice that we can give eachother a chuckle from time to time because it cracks me up when someone plays the "he was Rookie of the Year" card in some feeble attempt to justify that draft pick. Not only were his stats pedestrian, you don't take a one dimensional oft-injured RB that wasn't even the best RB on his team with the #5 overall pick. And as a rebuttal to your offering, i make this offering of my own:Carnell Williams' rookie stats: 1178 yds rushing, 81 yds receiving, 6 tdMaurice Jones Drew rookie stats: 941 yds rushing, 436 yds receiving, 16 tdsCarnell wins ROY in '05, Jones-Drew comes in 4th in '06 and is clearly a far superior back.
Gruden's drafting was fairly poor ...but the man could coach and I think some of you all have forgotten that. After 2003 the Glazer's simply stopped putting money into the team (1st due to cap hell then after ManU they simply stopped) so the fact that Gruden took essentially cast offs and backups and put up back to back 9-7 seasons his last 2 years is a credit to his coaching. Heck if Kiffen didn't pack it in the last 4 games of Gru's last season (after annoucing he was going to go coach with his son) the Bucs might have picked up a couple more wins that last season and been thick in the playoffs again. After the back to back stupidity of Raheem and Schiano I long for those days! Heck give Gruden this years team and I bet the final game on Sunday against the Saints would have been about playoff positioning, not trying to save a job.
If we had gone 9-7 we would be stuck with Rutgers. We would have missed the playoffs. We would have a more challenging 2014 schedule and lastly we would be drafting in an area that is statistically more likely to produce a bust.
If we were 9-7 there might not be any need to fire 'Rutgers' at all. Its not like this is not a thread about a HC that got fired after going 9-7...aka we could still replace 'Rutgers' with a better guy even if he is an above average one.No clue how mid 1st runders have a higher bust rate than top5 picks...they are just cheaper and less sexy. But we are in better shape now then we were in 2008, not because of the record(whether you like 4 or 9 wins) but because of the talent on the team...this time a good HC might actually have a chance to win some with the current team. Grudens team sucked and thats why he deserved to be replaced...and todays team proves it to not have been the wrong move.
