OK, given that the OC was Leftwich, how many points per game would the Bucs have scored with my "garden variety" QB in your opinion?

Less.

They would’ve scored less.

It would’ve been the 32nd ranked scoring offense, and probably by a 2.5-3 point margin.

And, they would’ve lost more games.

Now, I’ll ask you this.

We have new OC and a completely different scheme, one that should be fairly creative and QB/WR friendly.

Who would lead a higher scoring offense under this system?

Brady or Mayfield/Trask/Dalton(lol)?

OK first by saying it would have been a 2.5 to 3 point margin, you are saying the Bucs would have scored 14 or 15 points per game similar to the 2021 Jaguars who scored 14.9.  Hard to believe they would be that bad with the players they have on offense, but OK that's your opinion.  I disagree.

As for your question, assuming a 46 year old Brady and 36 year old Dalton, of that bunch I will reluctantly go with 27 year old Mayfield,  a veteran who is almost a full two decades younger than Brady.  You can't ask a new OC to draw up an entire offense around a QB who is anchored to the pocket and going to dump the ball off in 2 seconds.   Dalton and Trask aren't statues, but Mayfield has the most mobility of those four choices, so I'm going with him.  I want the OC to be able to be creative and draw up a few option plays and roll outs.  Mayfield will make some cringeworthy bad throws and fumbles, but he'll give the coordinator the ability to draw up the kind of offense he wants.    Mayfield.

Shocked that you would disagree. Shocked I tell you.

But, they would also have the same OC that you've given a pass.

You know...the same predictable, unimaginative, low-IQ, stubborn moron calling in the same 6-8 plays. Out of the same formations. On the same downs. In the same order. In the same scenarios. And, the list goes on, and on, and on...

Funny that you think the offense would've been better with a lesser QB.

But, I digress to your "non-bias".

Hmmm...

Now, hear me out (and I'll go slow for you).

Maybe...just maybe...you can ask your new OC to draw up an entire offense that is schematically friendly to a QB (and your receivers). An offense that creates opportunities for our receivers to take advantage of mismatches via motions, misdirection, and play-action (I'll let you in on a hint...it works even when your run game is ass. There's actual DATA and HISTORICAL ANALYSIS to back that up). Man beaters, rubs, natural picks, crossers, routes that attack at multiple levels, running out of 10 and 11 personnel, etc.

Or, as our ACTUAL new OC put it, allow your QB to play point guard.

I mean, this is a far cry from your boy Byron, who looked into his 6-8 plays (in sequence) and wonder why he was figured out days before they even took the field.

of that bunch I will reluctantly go with 27 year old Mayfield,

Nice.

I would take the QB who ranked in the Top-3 in DYAR and YAR. The QB who was ranked in the Top-10 in DVOA. The one who was ranked #2 in EYds. The same one who had a 3/1 TD to INT ratio.

The one who was still ranked in the top half of the league (or higher) in most pertinent advanced analytics for passers.

The one who would no longer be handicapped by the dipshit OC who can't even find a college gig.

Now, I'd love to see you answer the questions @badabingbucs asked.

No QB would have survived under Leftwitch last year.  It was that bad.

Lefty could have made Mahomes average 5 less points last year.

He was unimaginably bad.

Leftwich is not "my boy" and I've repeatedly said he deserved to be fired.  But apparently, if you dare to suggest that Leftwich was limited by Brady's limitations that equates to supporting him.   As Donkey pointed out, there are things you can do, and Leftwich wasn't able to come up with any solutions.  It's your job as OC to come up with an offense that works with the personnel you have.   But that doesn't mean it wasn't an advantage to the defenses to know that the QB wasn't going to try to escape the pocket or extend a play.  Defenses adapted to the Brady offense. The Bucs couldn't meet that challenge.

But Tom Brady is out there. Brady could be his own OC.  Brady could check out of plays and call plays at the line.  He could have done a lot on his own if play calling was the only issue.  I'm sure there was a lot going on behind the scenes in the offseason.  If Bowles had demanded a more balanced offense and didn't get it, where was Brady during this conversation?  Nobody told him?  Come on.

I'm pretty sure we all agree that if Brady was an OC, he'd be one of the best in the league. But that doesn't make him any younger or faster.  It's just convenient to put it all on Leftwich, make him the scapegoat.  And that's what you guys are doing, while even recognizing Brady didn't have the best year, you are implying that if it wasn't for Leftwich and Donovan Smith we would have gone 11-5 and been the team that everyone predicted at the beginning of the season.  That's simply not true.

you have suggested that their keeping players this off-season from the prior roster indicated that Licht thinks the team wins it all last year without Brady

Posted by: @catherder

The Bucs think the 2023 team will be better without Brady than with him.  Why do I say that? It's implied because Licht would not have decided to run it back with this group if he didn't think the team believed in itself, if he didn't think the team could win.  If Licht thought his players were demoralized, dispirited, overwhelmed or disorganized he wouldn't have been making the moves he's been making to retain the vast majority of the players on this team.  Licht has the pulse of the team, and he's going all in with the team he has. Will he turn out to be right?  That's another story.  Only time will tell.

It's just convenient to put it all on Leftwich, make him the scapegoat.

It’s not convenient. It’s fact.

Again, why hasn’t this genius OC found a job yet?

I mean, there should’ve been droves of Pro and College programs courting his greatness.

Why not, Professor?

you are implying that if it wasn't for Leftwich and Donovan Smith we would have gone 11-5

I’d bet my boat that if Canales was the OC last year, we win 11 games.

And, most likely, finish with a Top-10 scoring offense.

It wasn't Brady's mobility it was his regression and the lines regression.

Lefty no longer was OCing a stacked talent team with great chemistry and stayed healthy.

He had a more middle of the road unit due to what I mentioned... and as such what was being masked by talent now required better ingenuity.

I don't think Lefty was EVER very good. I think he had some good games and good runs but overall it was the talent and execution...

That isn't to say he didn't call some great games... he did that great call in the super bowl that setup the gronk TD.

But he was never elite... and was PRAYING Jacksonville would hire him.

And yes, he failed to find a way to make the offense work with what we had and yes Brady being immobile was part of the problem.

Agree 100%, the overabundance of talent was Lefty's crutch. Once that talent eroded after two seasons (with all the same players running it back), Lefty was unable to adjust to make the offense perform better. Jacksonville was so fortunate not to have hired Lefty as HC, he would have set back that franchise at least another 5 years. They are so much better off with Peterson running the show there, note the one-season turnaround and playoff berth.

Article in PR today with Bowles noting the lack of turnovers created by the D as well as the inability to get off the field on 3rd down.

The offense was terrible but it wasn’t just play calling and it wasn’t just the offense. Look at the playoff loss to Cowboys. The most important game. Leftwich was certainly unable to adapt but he has to adapt because key pieces didn’t exist or underperformed

Agreed, all part of the process of Brady retires, Brady is back, Arians retires, new head coach but old staff,  Gronk not coming back or is he, Marpet retires . . .

Bowles did imprint some type of identity on the defensive side of the ball but they simply ran out of horses aka talent in the front seven down the stretch.  Front seven needs an infusion of youth.

On offense the lack of identity and urgency to be aggressive was evident.

Fix the trenches, better play calling on offense and I think the Bucs can be competitive again in a hurry.
