The free agency activity at OBP has been an absolute whirlwind, and while I'm still bummed about getting squat for Revis, I can't help but be a little excited at the possibilities for next year's team. From all appearances, we have shored up the defensive line, replaced Revis with a solid replacement better suited for Lovie's system, rebuilt the O-line and found a short term solution at QB. Oh yeah, and there's that whole draft thing happening in less than two months. I must say that I am impressed with Licht thus far, especially in how he is systematically attacking roster weaknesses and setting the team up with the ability to truly draft the BPA in May. You have to love that. But, I must admit, I am a little concerned with these signings. While most Buc fans are jumping with joy, I am looking at some of these signings and seeing a lot of money being invested in potential and not necessarily performance. With the possible exception of Verner, it seems like all of these signings have really only had one season of relative success. Johnson looked like a beast in 2012 but failed to repeat that success last season. Does he have the tools? Absolutely. The potential to be an elite pass rusher is there and he has flashed. Still. Where is the consistency? McCown? He's easy. Up until last season, he was an absolute journeyman....low end starter, high end back-up....that's the phrase Ive seen thrown out about him and I concur with that assessment. That said, his contract is relatively team-friendly, so not as much risk there. Collins and EDS OTOH, have only one season under their belts as starters and we have tied up a decent amount of money in them. Again, we saw the potential and the flashes, but........we saw that in Freeman as well. Not trying to be a Debbie Downer but I sincerely hope that Buc fans aren't looking at these guys like saviors. They're not. They are merely pieces....expensive pieces, that in my opinion, carry more of a risk than most will willingly admit.I sure hope the new regime knows what the hell they're doing.
