Dean gave up the completion trying to recreate his prior INTs, but that completion becomes a 63 yard TD because Tykee Smith is playing the angle like a donkey. SR raised it in his postgame article, but alos pointed out that Smith was semi-benched as result?
"Early in the game, Smith got caught on a poor angle while playing a deep half zone. Theo Wease was able to get an advantageous vertical angle on Smith down the left sideline. That created an easy shot play from Dolphins quarterback Quinn Ewers for a 63-yard touchdown on 3rd and 8 when the Bucs were in position to get a defensive stop. Instead, Miami tied the game at 7-all.Smith would seemingly get benched shortly after that play as Christian Izien took over for him for the majority of the game."
Bowles moved Smith to safety at Smith's request. It paid off early and there was an article about Smith's great play, but its been all down hill since the bye. Maybe Smith is part of the breaking of the system that Bowles keeps alluding to? Smith plays a critical role.
a little palace intrigue as the walls crumble down . .
Bowles postgame
“It’s not the leadership failing, it’s the execution — of certain times and doing certain things with certain guys,” Bowles replied. “The leadership has been great. The message has been great by the leaders. We just got to execute at critical times.”
I mean I didn’t watch much of this game today. I quit on team but box score would suggest baker was the biggest issue today

He was. He had more than enough time for most of the day, he just could not get the ball to open receivers. The fumble wasn’t on him, but both interceptions were. One was a horrible throw that probably would have been a TD and the second one was a horrible decision. Another bad day for the QB. The OC could have done a better job, but there were plays out there to be made.
There is really no excuse for the offense to be this bad. Where are the explosive plays we saw at the beginning of the season? It’s largely because of QB play.

yeah Baker is a big concern at this point. The worst thing Licht and Glazers can do is 1 - bring back bowles and his inept coaching staff and 2 - extend baker prematurely this off-season at a premium.
If he wants to get extended at his $35M a year, for another 2 years, then ok but i would think he's looking for the QB market value at 50M plus, we should pump the breaks. I rather pay Baker that money when he shows he's the 2024 Baker with a competent offensive play caller
Winfield and Smith looked bad out there.
Tykee has been one of our best all year. Some of our guys are pressing to try to make big plays, because the scheme doesn’t provide it often enough. It’s a bad place to be in as a team. But start running off good players like Tykee and Bucky, and watch what kind of product you’ll have.

Yes I meant overall post-bye decline, not just today.
Smith had a bad game but I agree on Mayfield. He really struggled.

Smith is a good player and safeties are often the place to see the strain when a defense isn't performing but I was focused on the benching part. No way he's benched only for taking a bad angle on that play.
Winfield and Smith looked bad out there.
yes that's why the benching stands out. Winfield gives up a big 3rd conversion because his eyes are in the backfilled.
to be transparent I did not notice Smith being benched. I am only reacting to SR's reporting
Baker was not the sole reason we lost but he gets part of the blame. Hard to assess without seeing what he saw but again the offense plays on the razor edge to complete passes.
Winfield and Smith looked bad out there.
They are 100% part of the problem. Constantly out of position.
Smith might just need to go back to the slot
I don’t think so.
hes been the best player along with dean in the secondary this year imho.
sure awj is the household name. Made the pro bowl. But his stats aren’t there(looking at the refs for screwing him out of 2 tds vs the saints)
between Morrison Parrish Tykee the future of the secondary is bright. Maybe they franchise Dean? Dunno if he’s worth it. Having a good year as well though.

"I missed this in real time, but sure looks like the Bucs benched Tykee Smith after the Dolphins got a touchdown in final two minutes of first half. Christian Izien took over at safety in the second half. Smith also was out of position on Miami's first long touchdown."
The defense played better in the second half
maore Auman
"Winfield was the far safety on the Wease touchdown. They blitzed the nickel on that side and Bowles said Dean was right to expect help in deep coverage. Smith was the near safety."
Smith's angle is horrible because it looks like he might have though he could get to it for a second, but man that ignores his primary role and he never would've gotten there
