Maybe they franchise Dean? Dunno if he’s worth it. Having a good year as well though.

With our cap situation (mixed with needs), franchising Dean would be a massive mistake.

He's made it known he wants to finish his career in Tampa, and would be willing to do so at below-market value.

Unfortunately for us, he's most likely played his way into another big pay day. And, at this juncture of his career, you can't blame him.

Would love to see him here with a better DC.

Let him walk and get the comp pick. Easy decision

Even if you think Dean is talented, he only plays when he wants. There's no "I" in team.

i mean we drafted parrish and morrison and for some odd reason extending McCollum prematurely this year otherwise, Dean would have been an option.

Licht seat is starting to get warm for sure.  His next coaching hire better last more than 2-3 years or he's out with him.

I dont think so. They were kicking Dean to the curb. Its like they did what they could to get the best out of his THIS season, but hes gone.  I mean, the criticism of McCollum is that he got paid and then went to shit.  Dean is THAT on steroids, only playing this season because a new contract (with another team) is on the line.

You still see people referring to Smith as our "best defensive player." This is JP Peterson replying to Auman's tweet about the Smith benching:

"It’s about time for some accountability around here!! But TBH…seems a little weird to start with your best defensive player. There are so many candidates that keep playing!!"

https://x.com/JPPetersonshow/status/2005858545011450029?s=20

He has not been even close to the best defensive player since the BYE.

He's also been involved in several critical busts since the bye, all of them by being OUT OF POSITION.  Both TDs scored by the Dolphins. He is the (completely missing in action) deep help when Morrison is beat by the Patriots.

He also missed multiple key tackles in the HOLE  . . . his primary role. . . releasing big runs.

The most obvious measure of his negative impact though is that Bucs defense played markedly better against the Dolphins with Smith on the bench. The Bucs D got off the field repeatedly, played the run and pass better. I think only gave up a FG.

nah my point being is there was no reason to extend Zyon after 1 season.  We could have seen who was better and picked that player.

but double my point was that drafting 2 cornerbacks high likely signaled the end of Dean anyway

"Christian Izien, who started at safety in place of an injured Tykee Smith against Atlanta in Week 15, got back into the game on Sunday in Miami, but this time not due solely to injury. Izien replaced Smith next to Antoine Winfield in the second half and ended up logging 29 defensive snaps to 26 for Smith. Head Coach Todd Bowles later said that Smith was a bit banged up and had had a rough start to the game, so he inserted Izien into the contest to try to get a spark in the secondary. Izien finished with two tackles, including one on tight end Darren Waller for no gain on a short catch deep in Carolina territory in the fourth quarter. Bowles also said that Smith remains the starter going forward."

Yes I am confused by the extension of McCollum too, but admittedly don't really follow contracts much. I think they tried to kick Dean to the curb already and he just called their bluff, so in my mind he was a one year rental and they even showed that by making him split time with Morrison.  I dont know what they gained by extending McCollum. They lost his good play that part is for sure.

to me you only extend contracts prematurely with proven commodities - Luke Goedeke was a good one for example.  Tristian Wirfs - Absolutely.  Guys that clearly are consistent and you know will be part of the plan the next couple years.

Baker Mayfield?  Ehh.  now yeah see, if he followed up his 2025 campaign similar to 2024 output, then yeah, would be all for extending him this offseason with 1 year remaining.  But his body of work isn't there and he seems to be closer to this 2025 version (again, looking at his career) and that 2024 was an anomaly. Under no circumstances do you extend Baker to a contract in 2026 until we see his play next year.

in terms of upcoming free agents, the only one they should sign is Mike Evans.  Everyone else, i would let walk - Reddick, Dean, David (yes time to retire pal), Gaines, Hall, Shepard, Heck, Vildor, White, Bridgewater, Jones, Otton, and Kief.  Get some fresh blood in here.

in terms of RFAs - Izien, Tucker, Watts - who cares, ok to bring them back as depth.

now let's look to 2027 free agents

Mayfield - no extension needed here in 2026

Vea - the dude is going to be 32 when contract is up, honestly no need to extend if hes still playing, maybe we give him the David, Evans type treatment

Nelson - no extenstion needed

McLaughin - a damn kicker, nah he can wait

Diaby, Dennis are also free agents in 2027 - yeah neither of them are game changers

Club options for Godwin and Kancey.

so really when talking about cap spend this offseason other than re-signing Evans, they really should have ample cash to round out the team with fresh, "non quitter" blood

@badabingbucs

A damn kicker? He's arguably the best kicker we have ever had. Need to keep him here.

Diaby I want back. He wont command a huge salary and is a good player. He would do well as a #2 pass rusher. They NEED to bring in a game changer opposite him.

Kancey- They will pick up his option. Make or break year for him. We know he's a good player and can rush the passer but needs to play at least 15 games to get a second contract.

Vea plays a position that guys can be effective in to their 30's so he should be brought back. His contract wont be as large as his current deal.

Yeah I agree for the most part... And if they want to leave we can take rack up some comp picks and use those to trade up as needed or add depth.

Great insight from McDaniel on the UNDISCIPLINED play of Smith on the 63 yard TD pass:

https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/dolphins-qb-quinn-ewers-called-181211014.html

"After Winfield dropped deep, Ewers correctly assumed that Buccaneers cornerback Jamel Dean's responsibility would be to pass off Wease to the safety, Tykee Smith. McDaniel feared Ewers would throw to tight end Darren Waller and it appeared as though the Buccaneers thought the same, as Smith took an angle far too shallow to keep up with Wease."

Smith would've had an INT on an earlier play but Winfield got in the way so in this play he saw his chance ands deviated from his primary responsibility.

INDIVIDUAL play over team responsibility.
