After watching the post-game press conference I have full-faith that Winston is everything this team needs. By his body language and the words he uses you can tell how emotionally invested he is in wanting this team to win and get better. If you watch all 6 minutes of this video you can tell he firmly believes everyone is not on the same page. He also strongly hints that he does not believe it's the coaches fault. He credits them for the amount of time they spend in preparation and their will. He discredits members of the team for not having that same will to win. Very unfamiliar for the very supportive and positive Winston we're used to seeing in interviews.Winston uses Adam Humphries as an example of why this team is going to get better. He says Adam Humpries is playing for the right reason "why" he plays football. Currently, Winston believes everyone is not playing for the same "why" and infers their "why" isn't beneficial to the team. He hints that the "guys" aren't all putting in the amount of work that they need to in order to be successful.Without calling out individuals these words are still very strong and are going to be the deciding factor of whether this team gets better. Winston says they need to get guys with the same mentality. Meaning, they need to cut ties with the guy's who do not share this mentality and go find the people who do. The big question that needs to be answered are who are these "guys" that are apparently unlike Adam Humphries and do not share the same will to win and are playing for the wrong reasons? The good news, in my opinion, is our leader has taken notice, and doesn't tolerate it. Looking at the Panthers, that is a team that gets "it" and is playing as a team. This "team" has band-aids all over it. What I do know is that we have been in a constant state of flux. Year after year of new schemes and players for these schemes. We need continuity in the worst way. Consistently changing is not going to develop a team. Our revolving door at multiple positions this year shows we do not have the players we need on this team. There is a lot to be said of the defensive scheme, yet again we noticed the same tired tricks were destroying us. Offensively, we are depleted of talent down the stretch. We desperately need more weapons at the receiver position. Evan's can't do it all like how we have been asking him to do and quite honestly he is a bit of a headcase. Jenkins has not proved to be reliable and his draft stock can no longer buy him favoritism. Defensively, we need edge rushers. We need strong safety play. Most importantly, there needs to be a scheme change where the same slant routes don't consistently dismantle us and keep the defense on the field. The cornerback position needs to be upgraded because the only player I see worthy of keeping in a starting role is Sterling Moore. This is a young team, it's a team fresh in its roots with a leader who was learning on the job. Year two under Winston should tell us a lot. Until year two is finished, I do not think it is in this teams best interest to part ways with Lovie. However, the defensive side needs to be addressed without question. Lovie deserves three years. Now that year 2 under Lovie is complete, I can honestly say I see progress from year 1. If in Year 3 we see additional progress worthy of merit than Lovie has proven his keep. However, it is too soon to part ways and we need to see where the ship is heading. There is a lot to be thankful for and honestly I cannot wait until next year to see what it will be like with Kwon in year 2 next to David who somehow might have had an even better year without us really noticing. I am undecided on how I feel about McCoy and will leave it at that. I am excited about year 3 and think we made a lot of improvements this year. The mantra in the Army is slow is steady and smooth is fast. Humble your expectations from a team that has been a bottom feeder longer than we all care to remember. These problems span way before Lovie. We need continuity. We need to develop a team. There were a lot of holes and there are still holes to be filled. But man do I feel better about the offense. We have also heavily favored the offense in the draft. We've patched and band-aide the defense unsuccessfully. I think if we start successfully filling the holes with the proper talent we will see improvement. Our 4th round pick was a sensation at MLB before being removed. I want to see what equally hungry talent can do on that side of the ball. I'm excited about the draft and am excited to see Buc Ball under Lovie in year 3! Show us what you got Buc's! It's your team Winston!
