yeah none of us are saying we want to see the next 5 years of Baker Mayfield
i think most of us want to draft a QB high next year. that being said, i think Baker is having arguably the best year of his career and will likely be re-signed to a 1 year, $25 million dollar deal, unless of course he reverts to slop.
he isn't Tom Brady. But he also isn't Jameis Winston.
with Baker, our ceiling would be a first round playoff exit. That is not what we hold as the gold standard given our 2 superbowls!
but this team lacks talent. we are mediocre talent wise and if we want to compete with Eagles, 49ers, and Dallas in the NFC; we need to get better at drafting
agreed
this is one reason Canales was the right hire. It’s just that his hire was not matched with an investment in personnel (beyond the rental of Mayfield). If anything we have gone further back in talent AND YET you can see signs of life in the offense
Changing the QB and seeing if Trask can do better is the least they can do.
If Bowles and Canales - who see Trask up close every day - thought that Trask was the better option HE WOULD ALREADY BE IN, right?
Trask would already be in because with the season going down Bowles and Canales would both want Mayfield as the scapegoat AND their change to a BETTER Trask would only highlight that they know what they are doing (if Trask outperformed Mayfield).
Trask would be the way these guys would save their job. They both also have ZERO allegiance to Mayfield. He is a one year rental whose had multiple games already.
So, the reasonable conclusion at the moment (highlighted due to future omission by Buggsy lol) is exactly what Jay Glazer reported. They know what they have and dont believe Trask to be better.
They could be wrong, but its not a conspiracy against Trask. Their interests are aligned

1-year, $25M for Baker Mayfield? He's shown what kind of QB he is (inconsistent at best) at every stop. If Licht brought that deal to the Glazers, they should send him packing immediately. That might possibly be the dumbest contract in the history of football. Hell, at least Albert Haynesworth was First Team All-Pro the two season prior to Washington's dumbass contract. Baker Mayfield has done nothing worthy of $25M for one season.
Daniel Jones got $40 million; Geno Smith got $35M
Baker throws 28 TDs to 9 picks; 4000 yards, guy is likely getting another deal. im hoping it's $25M, but maybe we can get him at $20M?
The way its trending Bowles will be fired. A new coaching staff will brought in and most likely want to pick his own QB. By the way TD:INT ratio is not a good indication of how well a qb is playing. Baker is bottom 10 in YPA in the NFL, which is a reason why we don't get many chunk play this year. Geno Smith and Jones have been underwhelming and examples to NOT pay a guy a huge chunk after one season.
Geno Smith . . . been underwhelming and examples to NOT pay a guy a huge chunk after one season
"Lastly, there’s the offense. Oh, it’s offensive. Only twice have the Seahawks scored offensive touchdowns in both halves, and Geno Smith has eight turnovers since the bye week. The offensive line has been a revolving door in terms of different starters, which has certainly impacted Geno’s performance to a degree, as well as what Shane Waldron probably wants to do as offensive coordinator. Even still, Waldron pretty much abandoned play-action for no reason against the Ravens, which made no sense while the game was still within reach. That doesn’t seem like putting your QB and OL in a position to succeed"
:-)

oh i agree with you, one of the worst things we can do is give Baker a big contract extension like the Giants and Seahawks did with their mediocre QBs.
it is also very likely that a new offensive minded head coach will have drafting a rookie QB as part of the plan but what if cry baby Caleb Williams or Drake Maye are not available?
Arizona likely to go QB, Carolina won't; Chicago likely to go QB, Giants who knows - they should but for some reason will ride out Daniel Jones for 15 years, New England likely to go QB.
so that is 3 teams that are ahead of us draft wise that will undoubtedly take the top 2-3 QBs.
and given we are the Bucs, i am sure we will win 1-2 meaningless games after losing 8 in a row just to screw up the future.
so if that happens, who will this first time head coach pick? coming off injury Kirk Cousins? trying to save their careers Justin Fields or Kyler Murray? A guy that is familiar with the WR core team, locker room?
so yeah first round rookie is obviously plan A but if we are picking at 8-13, our guys may not be there and of the guys listed above, hard not to go Baker there

Your arguments here are not very persuasive, as most agree the Jones contract was ludicrous and Smith was coming off winning Comeback POTY while having a far better season than Mayfield is.
My point remains: if Licht goes to the Glazers arguing Mayfield should get a $25M contact for one season, he should be fired immediately.
Heres' the problem though, he really isn't pressured as much as you seem to think. The Bucs are middle of the pack in pass blocking win rate. He's also one of the least sacked QB's, though he has avoided some, but also ran into some, so that's a wash to me. The reality is the coaches can think whatever about Trask, but history has proven time and again that the only way to know is to let them go out there and play games with the starting cast. Why was Brady on the bench for Bledsoe? Purdy the 3rd QB? Favre a backup and traded away by the Falcons? I could go on. Hell, we gave up a HOF QB in Young cause we thought he wasn't the answer over DeBerg. Even Trask had to sit behind Franks who "won" practice and had all the "moxie" until he got hurt against Kentucky (while losing) and Trask came in and lit it up and had one of the greatest SEC QB careers ever, minus the titles since they didn't have a good defense and couldn't run the ball.
Defenses are playing us the way they are because they're not scared of Mayfield beating them. They are blitzing more and stuffing the run more, and dropping a bunch back on obvious passing downs. He's treading water, and the scoring, or lack thereof, shows this. He only looked good last week due to the depleted secondary he was facing, and he still had a bunch of short drives. He's not the answer. If Todd Bowles would learn from his other personnel mistakes, he'd realize he's riding a broken horse and needs to change out and see if things improve. I'm not saying Trask will be the answer, but he might. We know Baker isn't. Time to move on before we're in worst shape than already.
I get your point just saying that th coaches would make the change if they agreed.
we should’ve won last week with Mayfield at the helm
I don’t see much in Mayfield. I get the leadership part but he is perpetually late on throws and often off target.

This is a prime example. Seen way too many endzone or all 22 replays where you see someone like Evans wide open and he doesn't take the shot. At Florida, Trask would always take the deeper throw if it was open. All I can say is It's a Bucs Life.

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Baker is playing good enough to get paid 15-20m next year... and I hope he does.
Just not by us...
Give us the comp pick.
Overall I think Baker has played better than expected and is a good leader. But he's limited and we all see it.
I've been a Trask hater but I would like to see him at some point.
If we lose to the Titans it might make sense to make the the switch even if Baker doesn't deserve it.

Agreed, and it's not even on the deep shots. There are intermediate shots that have been open, sometimes WIDE open, that Mayfield misses for a variety of reasons. The play or so prior to the flea-flicker, Palmer had beaten his man for a nice chunk-gain, but Mayfield threw the ball behind Palmer - allowing the DB to make up ground and get the PD. He made the right read there, but the ball placement was poor.
But he'll mostly check it down and make his completion percentage, QB rating, etc. go up while the YPA, scoring, etc. go down. We know exactly what type of QB Baker Mayfield is, and it's not a particular good one.
