I think I'm at the point where I'm feeling he is a liability on far too many snaps. His play is the MLB version of a running back who gets stuffed or TFLed or 2-3 yard gains (with maybe a few 4 yard gains) on 13 carries (for 30 yards) and then pops a big one for 50 yards.
He makes a couple big plays a game. And they're often big plays (Fumbles Forced or Recovered, a Sack, maybe a stray Pick). And yes, those raw stats may look good on the stat sheet and they certainly help change momentum, but performing well below expectation in the majority of your assignments (especially in the passing game) just doesn't make up for it.
I'm constantly seeing him fail to actually cover people in his mid-zone coverages.
He doesn't win in Man coverage (he often loses and loses badly).
He's often late to read and react to his keys in the run game and therefore late to get downhill into his run fit...or he gets caught up in play wash that he has no business getting caught up in (Kuechly or Wagner would have been into and through their gap to disrupt or make the play almost every time).
He misses a LOT of tackles or overpursues or takes a wrong angle.
He gets distracted by horizontal set dressing and false-stepped out of getting to his assignment immediately.
He doesn't diagnose offenses like great MLBs do and get the back 7 into a better position to defend what is to come.
I don't know. I watch his tape and I see so much of this defense's struggles related to a ton of snaps where he doesn't play well. Bare minimum I feel like he just shouldn't be on the field in Nickel situations. More and more, I feel like I don't want to see him playing MLB for this team next year (and definitely not at a ridiculous price).
Beckwith doesn't make the splash plays he makes and isn't as athletic, but he is a much better, more consistent player assignment in, assignment-out.
