We are 33 days from the draft and almost all mock drafts have the Bucs drafting Jameis Winston. But those with different opinions continue to feel that there is a chance the Bucs will trade down. One of those folks is Tony Dungy. Dungy said (through Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk) that his old friend would be inclined to trade down and get a lot of picks to address several needs on the team.Why? Why on earth would Tampa Bay do that?Look, I get the reasons for trading down. It would be naive not to. But to pass up a chance of selecting a franchise quarterback — something general manager Jason Licht said he wouldn’t do — is setting yourself up for failure down the road. Is Mike Glennon the answer? No. How often will the Buccaneers have their best shot of drafting a franchise quarterback with no uncertainty ahead of them in the draft? There should be zero chance, zero thought of something so absurdly wrong to do.Winston has “wowed” in meetings, in the classrooms, and will soon impress at workouts. That’s still not important to some as they say that he can still turn out to be a bust. Well here’s something for those who believe that, anyone in the draft can be a bust. Trading down doesn’t guarantee you anything other than bypassing a franchise quarterback.Then there is some potential hope. Hope that Smith’s backing of Winston’s transgressions are valid. If only the ignorance of many — who continue to assassinate his character — allows some detractors to look at all the information that is out there to obtain. But the laziness that overcomes the public and media alike prohibits them from doing so.Smith can not ignore Winston at the top of the draft as that won’t make him a winner. If he does, he will find himself loading boxes from his office into a vehicle just like his pal Dungy did on a wet and cold evening when the Glazers had enough of him in January of 2002.LINK
