So Trask was pressured 39% of the time and Mayfield only 22% of the time. Interesting. What really interested me was that Stinson Bennett was pressured 49% of the time and yet, according to reports, he had a great game.
For Trask to get the nod as the starter for game 1, he would have to be head and shoulders better than Mayfield in TC and the preseason games. If Trask is only moderately better than Mayfield, Bowles will name Mayfield as the starter using the old adage of experience.

Other than the safety blitz on his blind side that Trask did not identify pre snap I was pretty happy with his performance. Trask has definitely closed the gap compared to Mayfield.
Trask improved from last year by having a better feel of the rush and stepping up by climbing the pocket to avoid pressure. Trask truly shined from a play action offense and when the Bucs offense went hurry up.
Honestly it doesn't matter which QB starts because both are more suited for a play action oriented offense anyways that Canales will be using.
The big question mark is the running game though.
Trask did not make the decision tougher, but he did make it easier for the second guessers later on. The Bucs will start Mayfield going forward, but if he struggles there will be many calling for Trask. I guess that doesn't necessarily mean Bowles will change his mind any faster. Trask has shown he can do the job, and the Bucs can feel comfortable that if he gets the call it won't be a huge drop off from Mayfield.
All QBs in the NFL will get more credit or more blame than they deserve, and that won't be any different for the Bucs. Neither QB is going to win games we should have lost, but they'll keep us in games and win them if the rest of the team plays well.
On the bright side, at least trask secured #2 job (for now)

Bowles will likely pull the turd out and start Mayfield because he thinks idiotic crap like moxie and bad experience is better than a guy that played better overall in the preseason and clearly has much more upside as he keeps improving, even during the game itself. Trask is only held back by experience. Get him the experience and you have a starter that might just give you a reason to be the first drafted QB to ever resign with the Bucs. Keep in mind Trask played a better defense on the road and averaged over 12 yards per completion across both games. Keep in mind that the whole "moxie" and "mixing it up with teammates" is why Mullen chose Franks over Trask, and was lucky to have Franks get injured so he could find out that Trask was superior to him. Many Gator fans wanted to know after a couple of games why the hell Mullen kept starting Franks over the clearly superior QB.
I will say this, if Bowles starts Mayfield and has to pull him after a few games for Trask, then, unless the Trask turns the team around and they go to the playoffs and win a game, he should be fired for going this route in the first place. You don't start a 6th year QB, on his 4th team, with a career 1.67:1 TD:Int ratio over your second round draft pick who came out of the preseason with better overall numbers and who shows signs of greater potential. Doing so is a cover you ass and try not to lose strategy which will always backfire in this league. You need to go with the guy that shows the potential to be the long term answer over a one year rent-a-QB.
Matera needs to chill out. Sure, the starter not to be named is Mayfield. Why don't they just name him? Because they committed to a process and they're following through with the process. Long ago they said Mayfield would start week 1 and Trask week 2. They never said who would start week 3, so obviously the winner would start week 3. They'll watch the film of Week 2 evaluate everything, and come to a conclusion. Sure it's a foregone conclusion, but what's wrong with having a plan and sticking to it? Matera and others need to relax. They'll name the starter Tuesday or Wednesday.
Agree with Bucharbour that Bowles is on the hook for this decision. It seems like an easy decision to go with the guy who has the experience and the "moxie", but screw all that. Just pick the better QB, because a bad QB will be exposed no matter how much moxie he has. If he picks Mayfield and switches to Trask that means he admits made the wrong choice and should be held accountable for that choice. If Mayfield is better, play him. But I hope it's because he's better, not just because he has "moxie."

It will be interesting to see what they do next week. They've said all of the starters will get some plays next week, but what happens if Trask gets a chance to play behind the starting line, throwing the ball to Evans and Godwin, then goes out and lights it up? You can't keep hiding 6' Jameis on the bench. Eventually, he's got to go out there and play a full game, and if he starts throwing picks and losing fumbles when he gets sacked, you'll look dumb for having chosen him because of some ridiculous "moxie" BS and the desire to finally play the guy you wanted to draft a few years ago. He's on his 4th team, and people think we can't win with him, for a reason.

Bowles basically doesn't want Mayfield to get hurt behind a line, the same line that ended our 3rd stringer's season; and trots Trask out there because he's "Fresh". And quite frankly, that was a great coaching move by Todd. First time in a while we could say that.

We have no shot at playoffs with Trask. At least with Mayfield there is hope he can potentially get to his Cleveland days maybe even improve on those days and potentially make the playoffs.

I don't think Bowles cares that much about the optics of the preseason. It's just preseason. He's been around long enough to know that all that matters is what happens when the real bullets are flying. That's when he and Mayfield will be judged. If there are a bunch of 3 and outs and turnovers then nobody will give a crap about the moxie. Nobody is in denial. Everybody knows Mayfield is going to be the starter. I'd say 95% chance. I'm just saying they stated at the beginning what process they were going to go through and that's what they're doing. They're not deviating from their original plan. I say 95% because there's 5% chance that Canales is the wildcard. If Bowles defers to Canales and Canales wants to put his stamp on things and show that he's going to take his own path and not the one chosen for him by everybody else. But that would come out of left field, nobody including myself thinks that will happen.
