I believe that there won't be a Mayfield deal until after this season. And the season results will drive that one way or the other.
yeah makes sense and I do think a deal will get done after the season
Ofcourse they will start conversations now but offering him a 2 year, $90m Daniel jones type deal is not what baker and his camp have in mind. Bucs want to make baker feel wanted but they are also running a business
and you are right, if baker plays like shit, Bucs go 6-11, they will let new coach decide what to do in terms of way forward and depending on draft and all that. Again, in this situation he played poorly
but my money would be on baker being hungry, Bucs winning division (one and done) and baker playing better than 2025, hence a new contract in Tampa
Also likely Bowles returns if Bucs win division
I believe that there won't be a Mayfield deal until after this season
could this mean that with a successful season by the offense Mayfield gets extended and Robinson becomes HC (Coen, Part Deux)?
The Bucs are handling this perfectly
sure baker is a likable guy. Nothing more awesome than him extending a drive on a 3rd and long scramble! Pumped up!
but this is business and there’s no reason to extend him now. If he was dominate last year like he was in 2024, then hell yeah, you reward him.
but since he wasn’t, nah you show him that last year was not the standard and you let him earn it
If only they took this approach with Bowles last offseason. Fuggin’ stupid extension.

yeah that was unbelievable. Firmly believe he is also fired if not for that extension. They wouldn’t have let him coach this season nor would they have extended him for that collapse
The only logical use of franchise tag is to buy more time for negotiations. Not a great way to motivate the key to your offensive production. If you did that, surprise, you’re the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bucs are handling this perfectly

Talk about spiking it on the 10 yard line…
Yeah, look for that contract to be much more expensive.I believe that there won't be a Mayfield deal until after this season

This is negotiating.

I don’t think any team wants to use the tag, but it is a last resort.
The only thing that has blocked the Bucs from moving on at head coach is a fear they can't get anyone better right now,
Was this quote from the Glazers’ short bus?
I haven’t seen something this retarded since the last time I flew into PHL.
If only they took this approach with Bowles last offseason. Fuggin’ stupid extension.
They decided choosing him over Coen wasn't quite stupid enough.

Which is why it's comical to me the slow ones advocate for it like it's no big deal, and it's the ideal approach.
I'm sure slapping on a non-workable one year $50M cap hit will do wonders with trying to extend Yaya, Mauch, sign FA's, etc.
The quote from Mayfield is that they ARE negotiating, just starting etc.
The potential of FALLING BACK on the tag is piece of leverage for the team, but no way the team would choose that as a final outcome. One piece of leverage, just like Mayfield leaving at the end or holding out would be leverage on the other side. or. Just like Mayfield setting an artificial "training camp" deadline or using the uncertainty over the coaching position as reason to require more security in this deal.
All normal stuff. The key thing is that both sides seem to want to get it done.

point is, we have all the leverage
Mr 16th best QB has none
The great Scott Reynolds said it best, “they want to know are they signing the 41 TD guy or the 26 TD guy!”
excellent reporting by PR
It does make sense that neither has moved on this. Baker needs some security and the bucs want to make sure that he is worth it since he's had some slides in performance at times. Also been banged up. I hope it works out. It's not easy finding a QB.
Stroud -
"Neither Baker Mayfield nor his agent has asked for $65 million per year. In fact, after the Bucs initial proposal, they haven’t made a counter offer. That might tell you something."
