Can he occupy a double team and hold his gap ? That is the main job of a nose guard , not pass rushing.At 285 I'd say probably not. To assume he'd be as strong against the run as Spence is seeing things through Jduds Mancrush colored glasses.

Anthony McFarland was the same height and 11 lbs heavier. Donald is built like a giant linebacker.....but if he gained 12lbs of belly fat.....then he'd be 300lbs and he'd be big enough. ::) ???

McFarland just wasn't that great. Doesn't matter what round he was taken....he was taken because the potential of a great pass rushing DT next to Sapp would be amazing. Just like a great pass rushing DT next to McCoy would be amazing. Brad Cullpepper was taken in the 10th round and weighed 275lbs....but he had 34 sacks in 6 years and was huge for us as a NT.

Of course a great pass rushing NT would be amazing. But a great pass catching TE would be amazing. A great pass rushing DE would be amazing. A great speed WR would be amazing. A great offensive lineman would be amazing. A great QB would be beyond amazing. You can't have everything.

It amazes me how people even after watching the game do not see what you state. No matter what the intentions of a NG are, double teams only go to the DT that cannot be often contained by one lineman. Spence also is inconsistent against the run btw. Some games where we allowed opposing teams to run at will, I would solely attribute it to Spence getting pushed around. Yes he is a rookie and will likely improve, but he by no means was a positive factor on defense last year.

Our run defense was suspect throughout the Dungy years. It was the one way we could be exploited- by a physical run attack. So , yes , you can get by with a lighter nosetackle , but will he stop the run as well as Spence can? No, and the difference in rush will be minimal because they are eating doubles for McCoy all day.

Often times the Center will get an initial chip on the Spence but then immediately turn to help with McCoy and leave the OG to handle Spence. I'm not making stuff up. Go watch.

An explosive upfield rusher like McCoy is already two steps into the backfield by the time the C can chip and then move that far to his side.

You guys can sit here all day talking about defensive alignments and philosophies and what a player can and can't do....but it's just a bunch of words and it doesn't change the truth. Film don't lie.
