If the Bucs plan is to promise McDaniel a future HC gig…it’s silly. McDaniel can easily make that happen by becoming the Detroit Lions OC and waiting for when Todd Bowles retires/gets fired. McDaniel will once again be a hot HC commodity for a good team.
While I would really like McDaniel as the next OC, I think from a strategic standpoint, it’s more likely that McDaniel is using the Bucs as leverage for the one team (seeking a new OC) that has better current offensive and defensive talent than the Bucs - the job in Detroit.
I don’t think he’s waiting for the right team, I think he’s negotiating.
So tell me what kind of deal do you think they'll offer McDaniel when they can't guarantee him for more than a year?
They can guarantee the money. Make him the highest paid OC and guarantee 2 years, 3 years if necessary.
Sadly, there are probably at least a few OC jobs that are more desirable and McDaniel will probably be offered one of them. We have to hope he (a) loves Florida, and (b) feels confident he’d have a shot to follow Bowles when the defense inevitably sinks this team again. I don’t expect it. We’ll probably end up with a 2nd or 3rd tier OC and have to look forward to another shitty season. At least we only have to suffer the Bowles shit another year.
