Lance Briggs ?@LanceBriggs Big congrats to Lovie Smith. Wish him the best of luck in Tampa. NFL is better with him in it.
Interesting hire. Seems like the Glazers are trying to recapture the past. Lovie only made the playoffs once in his last six seasons in Chicago.
There's always a debbie downer in the crowd. But, before we spew out random facts maybe you should look at what caused that? So how did Lovie, with what is universally considered a massive talent deficit, continue to field a team that was constantly competing for the playoffs throughout his ENTIRE tenure? Let's look at some of the player development first, 4th round throwaway pick Henry Melton who seemingly played everything at Texas but DT, develops into one of the 3 premier 4-3 interior pass rushers, and perhaps the best run stopping 4-3 DT. Danieal Manning leaves the Bears on $36M deal as a safety, Chris Harris became one of the best SS in the game, was traded, then comes back and is selected as an all pro FS. Charles Tillman quietly produces 80+ takeaways over a 10 year career. Let's look at some of the decline, Major Wright goes from a borderline probowler to PFFs worst safety in the league. Conte goes from solid starter to the PFFs 3rd worst safety. For crying out loud the defense went for #3 in scoring defense and #5 in total defense, to a bottom 3 unit in both categories, and a historically bad run defense in the pass first NFL of today. And Smith is just mediocre? 2, just 2 losing seasons (7-9) in the 8 years following Smith's first year without players that fit his scheme and the clown car of QBs.
A few points on the other side though too. I live 2 hrs west of Chicago so have seen plenty of Bears games and watched Lovie for years. He stubbornly stuck with an archaic offensive philosophy including Rex Grossman as QB. His OCs included Terry Shay, John Shoop, Mike Martz and Mike Tice. He approved trying to turn Devin Hester into a No. 1 WR. Runs the Tampa 2 defense but Revis is best in man to man. With that defense, he should've won a Super Bowl but lack of offense prevented that. I do like the hire, just hope he fixes offensive shortcomings.
Lol @ Anomaly still not happy. Hilarious
Only made the playoffs three out of nine tries and only once in the last six seasons. Would that be acceptable to you? Probably not. We'll see what happens. I am neither happy nor "down". I'd like to see the staff and what we do in FA and the draft before I get overly excited.
Not sure what coaching options out there can pique your interest.Lovie is a very good organizer and coach with ability to adjust in-game.He is a Superbowl quality coach, and he did a lot of his work with low-end quarterbacking. He is loved by players for his abilities. What is not to like? I am not through the roof for the guy, but he brings a smile and a nod of approval from me. Espescially considering Raheem and greggles...Ugh...way to absolutely kill my weekends!
Can't I take a wait and see approach before I pop any champagne open?
Well, it is New Years Day, so pop that sucker open anyway!Again, who would you prefer as the coach to make you "Happy", not "down"?It is a solid hire, and to say it is not acceptable is just repugnantly ignorant. And you did sidewind the guy when you mentioned his playoff record (including missing the playoffs with a double digit W season).

What a weak sauce comment by Chumpquan Bowers.Dude trying to blame S on his absurdly laughable play? Grow up. And don't forget where your gun is brah.
Agreed I really hope we don't sit n WAIT for Bowers to discover his potential. The guy couldn't even beat out fricking DTN!!
Both of those guys couldn't knock over a rusty toaster.
Another thing I do like about Lovie coming to Tampa - Bucs play NFC North next season and Lovie certainly is familiar with planning against them.

Go read that ESPN story on Lovie I posted on page 2 or so. Lovie admits his mistakes with the offense and plans to take a very different approach.

Solid yes. I never said he was unacceptable. Not sure where you are getting that from. It would ridiculous to not mention his lack of playoffs at his last job considering he's our new coach. I think it is pretty relevant. All that esoteric feel good stuff is great but the bottom line is wins/losses and making the playoffs.

No one is. But he's a steady, solid leader with a history in Tampa, a positive winning percentage, only 2 losing seasons, and he's been out of football for a year and altered his Offensive philosophy. It's not Landry, but it sure as hell isn't Schiano either.
This tedford guy is the same that developed dilfer, pittman, and Rodgers right?
gregg rosenthal ?@greggrosenthal Teams often choose opposite of coach they just fired. Lovie: The anti-Schiano.

Akili as well (I believe). Ugh!
Either way, Lovie is a solid choice for this team. The only thing that would make me happier today is if they immediately cut Leonard Johnson.
