No to both Smith and Polian. Do you guys remember how bad that Colts team was without Manning? Polian had how many years to stock that team with talent and not have to worry about the QB position?
LOL... yeah, because every team has great success when their future H.O.F. starter misses a whole season.
There is a vast difference between great success and the product they were putting on the field. Without Brady, Pats still won 11 games. Without Rogers, Packers at least made it interesting. Without Manning, Colts were the worst team in the NFL.
What you're seeing is the difference between Jim Caldwell... Bill Belichick and Mike McCarthy. That should be obvious based on who those coaches have, or had, at QB.
But when you take that QB out of the picture and the team completely collapses that shows me a poor job done by the GM. Colts must have agreed considering Polian was relieved of his duties.
No it doesn't. It shows the faith the team has in it's head coach. You know, it's kind of what happened here not too long ago.
So then why did they fire Polian? I am with you that Caldwell is not on the same level as Belichick and McCarthy. But I cannot look at what Polian built in Indy and say he is a fit for our job when there isnt a P. Manning for him to draft.
Irsay cleaned house. It's what he wanted to do. He wanted to start fresh. Why? I don't know. You'd have to ask him. I'm not saying I want Polian either. I just think Polian is just written off too quickly.

Possible, but I dont like him. But I usually lean towards hiring an up and comer rather than a retread for all my sport franchises I am a fan of.Not that PFT is the end all/be all...but come on...Landry Jones? http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/04/19/bill-polian-says-landry-jones-is-the-best-qb-in-the-draft/

Regarding Jones, you don't think it's a tad early to say he's wrong? In fact, I think it's pretty obvious that he's closer to being right than wrong.

based on what exactly?
"But I think the Glazer boys know this market, they can spend and spend but unless the team is 12-4 or 14-2 every year the fans will keep their wallets closed. It sucks for us die hards, but it's the reality of this market."How do you convince a quality coach to commit himself to that situation? You don't. You end up with what you can get.
SF's guy available? Back the Brinks truck up! Oh wait, it is the Glazers. They are cheap. We're Raiders west folks.
Cheap? Really? They squashed that argument a little while ago.
They are cheap. They bought a $3 mill dollar double coupon Schiano instead of paying someone. Or they have made this franchise toxic by their cheap ways and can't get anyone here. Something stinks.
If you don't like the coach that's one thing but I wouldn't call them cheap because of that. They had Kelly originally who backed out and would have been paying up the rear to get him. All of the other choices they had after that would have gotten the same 3 mil a year that Schiano got.
I almost went to Jared. Stopped in at Walmart, tho'...
I would say AJ Smith or Bill Polian.
I'm glad you have no say!!

based on what exactly?
Based on the fact that the Jets might still draft another QB after just drafting Smith... because he stinks.Based on the fact that Barkley played so terrible when given the chance.Based on the fact that EJ Manual (who I think could be a solid QB), hasn't played well at all.Based on the fact that Glennon hasn't really played that well at all. Here's the exact quote:
“I don’t think anybody in this group is going to be able to step in right away and lead the team, but if you ask me, who’s the guy who’s most ready, and who’s the guy who’s had the most winning experience, it would be Landry Jones,” Polian said.
To think that Landry Jones might be the best of this class, isn't really that absurd. The bar right now is set extremely low. Jones didn't have the luxury that Barkley, Smith, and Manuel had. It's not that easy to beat out Roethlisberger.
Polian inherited Jim Kelly, Bruce Smith and Andre Reed in Buffalo and Marvin Harrison and the #1 pick in the Manning draft in Indianapolis. He's not a good football guy as much as he found himself in situations where there were already hall of fame players in place. There are rumors that Harbaugh and Trent Baalke are not getting along and that Harbaugh wants more authority in his new contract. If Baalke shakes loose, that's the guy.
Baalke said the other day, there is zero truth to the rumors. He and Harbough get along just fine, and Harbough already has complete authority.
I would say AJ Smith or Bill Polian.
I'm glad you have no say!!
Smith is a real head case. Ask Vincent what he thinks of AJ Smith. They were constantly at war. Vincent held out a couple times because Smith refused to pay him. It got ugly. Smith told Vincent if he didn't report to camp he would put him on the Roster Exempt List. Which meant Vincent would have to sit out 3 games after they agreed on a new contract. They ended up tagging him, instead a long term deal. Smith is [was] a guy who would screw a player over any chance he could. Not exactly a good quality to have, when you are a NFL GM.
No to both Smith and Polian. Do you guys remember how bad that Colts team was without Manning? Polian had how many years to stock that team with talent and not have to worry about the QB position?

''Is it absurd, no. Is it a stretch and a half, absolutely. Nobody expected him to beat out Big Ben, but he didnt even beat out Bruce Gradkowski for #2. The bar might not be that high right now, but he is still looking way up at it.Lets look at some of these amazing draft picks by Mr. Polian:2011: OT - Castonzo, OT - Ijalanao, DT - Nevis, RB - Carter, CB - Rucker, 2010: DE - Hughes, LB - Angerer, CB - Thomas, G - McClendon, TE - Eldridge, DT - Mathews, LB - Conner, DB - Fisher 2009: RB - Brown, DT - Moala, CB - Powers, WR - Collie, DT - Taylor, QB - Painter, P - McAfee, G - Thomas2008: C - Pollak, LB - Wheeler, TE - Tamme, LB - Howard, TE - Santi, C - Justice, RB - Hart, WR - Garcon, C - RichardI only went back 4 years, but come on man. How do you look at this and honestly tell me this guy still knows talent. Most of these guys arent with the team anymore if they are even in the league. Yea, Garcon was a find...but you build your team with your first 3-4 picks each draft. We bitch and moan about Dominik......Colts fans wanted Polian's head on a pike and its hard to blame them.
What's Ron Wolf and Mike Holmgren doing these days? Seems like they had a bit of success together in Green Bay.
