Based on what we currently have heard and read is that the team will mold a defense to best fit is players; giving birth to a flexible yet complex attacking style of play. Armed with enough information to make a person like me dangerous and having given this some thought. My speculation is that the team will look more like a 3-4 defense i.e. will play a lot of 4-3 under Hybrid mixing both 2 gap and one gap responsibilities. It will essentially look like a 5-2 with five defenders at the LOS. Think Ravens / Seahawks front seven. There are several links below outlining what I believe will be what we as fans see from an alignment standpoint in 2016: Seahawks Multiple Defensive Fronts Seahawk Defense: The Scheme, Philosophy & identityDefining the Seahawks DefenseSeahawks 4-3 Under FrontSeahawks 4-3 Under Part I Seahawks 4-3 Under Part IIRavens 4-3 Under As to Gholston being a 5 Tech in such a defense he is a solid fit. As for a two gaping defensive tackle; McDonald played in Seattle's scheme. Akeem Spence has a low center of gravity and brute strength to hold the point - has experience playing the tilted nose. Being able to mix and match a player like Noah Spence and J Smith between LEO and SAM giving the team more flexibility in devising blitz schemes - the other caveat is LaVonte Davids ability as a rusher from the weak-side adding another layer to a creative defensive coordinator to incorporate. Also you don't have to have both the 1 and 5 Techs two gaping - you could just have the 1 Tech two gap and have another player being responsible for one of the 5 Techs original two gaps. Essentially you could have McCoy, Spence/Smith and David all on the weak-side blitzing or rushing the passer. You flip things around and you can become as creative as your imagination lets you or confined with in the constraints of a closed mind. But such would allow for a bunch of confusing looks to opposing QBs and offensive linemen aiding a teams battle plans week to week. Again the looks and responsibilities of which front four player is designated as the two gap-er is endless...thus giving a team greater flexibility - creating limitless possibilities of what a team is doing up front creating confusion.
However the biggest thing missing for a transition to a 4-3 Under is an athletic rangy safety who can cover an abundance of ground.
